Is Gravik Nick Fury’s son in Secret Invasion? We discuss a theory that Nick Fury adopted Gravik when he was a child, resulting in a personal conflict between the two. Spoilers for Secret Invasion Season 1 Episode 3.
Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Gravik is a ruthless Skrull in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leading a renegade band of Skrulls as they attempt to cause chaos and conflict over the Earth so they can rule it.
To this end, Gravik is masterminding several terrorist attacks across the globe, such as blowing up a dirty bomb in a Moscow square in episode one of Secret Invasion.
Nick Fury is attempting to stop this violent Skrull faction before they cause World War III, but at the moment is on the back foot.
It’s hard to fight the enemy when they could look like literally anyone, after all. But this conflict could be even more difficult and personal for Fury, as Gravik could have taken on the form of someone close to him to remind Fury every time the two cross paths.
Is Gravik Nick Fury’s son in Secret Invasion?
While Gravik isn’t Fury’s biological son (it’s revealed in episode two that Gravik’s parents were killed by the Kree), it’s possible he’s taken on the face of someone that Fury knows and is close to him, possibly even a family member. While in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s not known if Fury has a son or nephew, it was only recently that audiences found out he had a wife that had been kept secret for all these years and was a Skrull no less.
It wouldn’t be surprising if Fury revealed that he had another relative, one that has since died maybe. As there are a lot of audiences who don’t know about Fury’s personal life, this would be a huge reveal, and Secret Invasion has been fond of its big reveals and cliffhanger moments.
Gravik would likely don this form to make his fight against Fury even more personal than it already is, taunting Fury with a dead loved one every time he looked at Gravik.
Does Nick Fury have a son in the comics?
In the comics, the original Nick Fury in Marvel’s main universe has indeed fathered some children, a son called Mikel Fury with a weapons smuggler named Amber D’Alexis, and Nick Fury Jr. (the one modeled after Samuel L. Jackson) came from a brief love affair with a spy called Nia Jones.
Neither of these sons turns out to be Skrulls in the comics; they remain fully human.
Fury and Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine were also lovers in the comics, but they didn’t have any children.
It seems like this beat has been swapped over to Everett Ross in the MCU, as it was revealed in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever that the pair used to be married. This doesn’t mean such a relationship can’t happen with the MCU version of Fury in the future, but it seems unlikely for now.
Did Nick Fury adopt Gravik?
As it’s clear that Gravik was alive before coming to Earth, it’s possible that Fury adopted Gravik. He took a particular interest in the kid in a flashback in Secret Invasion, comforting him and recruiting him to work as a spy. It’s possible that Fury mentored the kid and offered him his home. This isn’t far-fetched either, as Fury married Priscilla, a Skrull, and lived with her, so to feel like a family, they might have adopted Gravik. Priscilla can contact Gravik on the phone, so it’s clear there’s some kind of personal relationship there.
This is a slightly different theory to the one about Gravik taking the form of Fury’s son, as here, Gravik doesn’t just take the form of someone close to Fury; he’s close to Fury himself.
It would still be just as personal, as Fury would have to watch as Gravik used all the skills he taught him to destabilize the world and try to take it over, probably still caring about the boy he took in. Gravik might even be angry at Fury for leaving, just like Priscilla was.
Audiences will hopefully find out if there is a deeper connection between Fury, Gravik, and Priscilla as the final few episodes of Secret Invasion release on Disney+.
