Jumper and Chronicle are two films about powered people, Jumper following David Rice (Hayden Christensen) as he gains the ability to teleport, and must go on the run from a shadowy society, and Chronicle following three teens as they gain the ability to teleport, with one of them abusing their power.

These types of films — a person gets powers and is oppressed by the government and a person gets powers and becomes twisted by them — are very common throughout Hollywood, as they keep coming up with new and inventive superpowers and ways to power people up.

Lucy (2014)

The film that infamously claimed that humans only use 10% of their brain, Lucy follows the titular character Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) gets tricked by her boyfriend, abducted by thugs, and finally surgically implanted with a package that has a powerful chemical that, once it gets into her system, gives her superhuman abilities.

She manages to escape and seeks out neurologist Professor Samuel Norman (Morgan Freeman) to help her.

Upgrade (2018)

After a brutal mugging leaves Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green) paralyzed and his wife dead, he takes a cure offered by billionaire Eron Keen (Harrison Gilbertson), an AI implant called STEM which will enhance his body.

Not only is Grey able to walk again, but he has super strength and agility, skills he uses against the thugs that ruined his life.

Push (2009)

Before Chris Evans became Captain America, and after his appearance in Fantastic Four, he would take on another role as a powered person, Nick Gant, someone who after his father was brutally murdered vows revenge on the perpetrators, a shadowy government agency called the Division.

They dabble in psychic warfare and drugs. He joins teenage clairvoyant Cassie (Dakota Fanning), as they search for a missing girl to destroy the Division.

The Darkest Minds (2018)

A group of teens finds themselves developing new sets of powerful abilities, and because the government doesn’t fully understand them, the teens quickly find themselves detained. One of the young people, Ruby Daly (Amandla Stenberg) escapes the camp and joins a group of runaways seeking haven.

But they realize running just isn’t enough, they have to resist.

Brightburn (2019)

Brightburn is a film directed by James Gunn and answers the question “What if Superman was evil?”. The film follows Brandon Breyer (Jackson A. Dunn), as he learns that he has incredible superpowers.

But as he nears puberty, a powerful darkness festers within him, and Brandon starts to act on this evil desires, while his adoptive family finds themselves in mortal danger.

Code 8 (2019)

Connor Reed (Robbie Amell) is a construction worker who has special electric powers. Due to living in extreme poverty, he can’t afford to pay for the treatment his mum Mary (Kari Matchett) desperately needs.

So, he turns to a life of crime to get the funds to pay for the medical treatment but finds himself getting caught up with law enforcement.

Unbreakable (2000)

David Dunn (Bruce Willis) is the only survivor of a train crash that killed many other people on it. He finds himself at the center of a conspiracy, suggesting that his survival might have been because he’s a superhero.

After the public learn about his survival, he’s tracked down by Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson), a man with unusually brittle bones. It’s the start of an unexpected trilogy, with Split and Glass following.

The New Mutants (2020)

The last X-Men film put out by 20th Century Fox, The New Mutants follows a group of young heroes – Danielle  Moonstar (Blu Hunt),  Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams),  Roberto da Costa (Henry Zaga), Illyana Rasputin (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Samuel Guthrie (Charlie Heaton) – as they try and escape a secret curing facility.

Firestarter (1984)

Andy McGee (David Keith) and his wife Vicky McGee (Heather Locklear) were tested on as youths, and subjected to many medical tests. Years later, the pair have a daughter called Charlie (Drew Barrymore), and she begins to show abilities like being able to start fires with her mind.

This makes Charlie extremely dangerous, and she becomes a target for a dark agency called The Shop.

Spider-Man (2002)

Many consider the original Sam Rami Spider-Man trilogy to be the best for the character (until the Spider-Verse movies top it), and the first film sets the bar high.

The film follows Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) as he gets bit by a radioactive spider and uses his powers to fight Norman Osborn, aka the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), and tries to manage his personal and superhero life.
