We recap the Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room Season 1 Episode 8, “Reunion,” which contains spoilers.

It has been established that Danny (Tom Holland)  has multiple personalities (known as alters) living inside of his head. In “Reunion,” Rya (Amanda Seyfried) queries the purpose of each individual personality as Danny starts to relive his past from the outside looking in.

These sessions run alongside the preparation for Danny’s trial as both parties try to build a stronger case.

The Crowded Room Season 1 Episode 8 Recap

Rya decides to start with Yitzak, Danny’s landlord and the most violent of Danny’s alter egos. Danny thinks back to his time spent as Yitzak.

They both agree that Yitzak dealt with all the physical threats to Danny; he was his protector, the muscle.

Next, Rya discusses Ariana. This was Danny’s best friend. Danny admits that Ariana was the one who had sex in his place. Danny still sees himself as a virgin. Rya digs deeper and theorizes that Ariana dealt with Danny’s feelings, his pain, and his suffering.

While these sessions get underway, Stan works the case. He is informed that Marlin lied about his alibi, Detective Matty Dunn has met with the stepfather, and he clearly has a scar on his arm. Matty thinks Marlin was possibly grazed by a bullet. Danny is telling the truth; Marlin was the target.

How could Stan get Danny’s sentence reduced?

Thanks to Rya’s sessions, they now have proof that Marlin is a liar and the perpetrator of Danny’s childhood trauma. To Stan, this provides a motive and helps them turn six counts of attempted murder into one count of aggravated assault instead. This could shorten Danny’s sentence considerably.

Rya wants Danny to get treatment, though; she wants him in a mental hospital, not a jail. There is a new treatment called fusion therapy that could help Danny merge all his alter egos into one to make him whole again. Stan isn’t interested, though. He wants Danny to serve the smallest sentence possible.

Who is Jerome?

Later, Danny receives a visitor. It is Jerome, a man that was deeply in love with Ariana. Danny is faced with a person who fell in love with one of his alters. It’s terribly awkward at first; Danny doesn’t recognize Jerome, and Jerome is hurt that Ariana isn’t there.

Jerome continues to visit Danny, though, hoping that Ariana will return. Danny stays strong and keeps the alter egos at bay. Jerome talks about how he first met Ariana and how they were in sync from the very beginning. Danny misses Ariana too. Jerome promises that Ariana is still a part of Danny.

Meanwhile, Marlin is served papers and summoned to testify for the defense in Danny’s trial. He meets with Ms. Richards of the prosecution with the aim of sabotaging Danny’s entire case.

Back in prison, Rya questions Danny about Jack, the British alter ego. He was supposedly friends with Danny’s father and persuaded Danny to flee to London. Rya proposes that the alters started to act erratically, putting Danny in needless danger as the system fell apart.

Rya thinks that Yitzak helped Danny escape America, and Jack helped Danny to return to face what he had done.

Next, they discuss Mike and Jonny, Danny’s best friends from school. Danny believes that Mike was the social, outgoing version of Danny, who helped Danny to be confident. While Jonny was the drug addict who covered the seedier side of Danny’s life and eventually helped him escape from Marlin.

Danny refuses to discuss Jonny any further, ashamed of his habit and his relationship with drug dealer Angelo.

What is the purpose of Danny’s alters?

Rya summarizes the purpose of all of Danny’s alter egos. They were all there to protect Danny, and they all tried to save Danny. In Rya’s eyes, this proves that subconsciously Danny has always been trying to save himself. She gifts Danny with a new suit for the trial.

Afterward, Jerome visits Danny for the very last time. Jerome says that he can’t keep doing this. He has to move on. Jerome hands Danny a necklace, which he says is a good luck charm. Danny allows Ariana to come to the surface to say her goodbyes. It’s a heartbreaking farewell.

The Crowded Room Season 1 Episode 8 Ending Explained

The episode ends with Stan updating Rya on the case. Marlin has lied to his team about Danny. He’s also gathered evidence that Danny has a history of violence. Marlin brings up the shooting, which involved Angelo. There will be new witnesses, and Danny could be facing life behind bars now.

Panicked, Stan wants to renegotiate the deal. Rya will need to get Candy to testify and prove that multiple personality disorders are real and that Danny has the disorder. Rya has a lot on her plate, but Danny’s future is at stake.

Meanwhile, Jonny creeps back into Danny’s head, causing further trouble.
