10 Movies like Shooter you must watch

We discuss 10 Movies like Shooter you must watch. Add these well-recommended and highly-rated films to your watch list.

Mark Wahlberg’s action-thriller Shooter (2007), by director Antoine Fuqua, follows the actor as a former soldier betrayed by his own government and his relentless hunt against the corrupt leaders that wronged him.

If you’ve seen it recently and are looking for some additional recommendations, here are 10 movies like Shooter you must watch.

10 Movies like Shooter

The Fugitive (1993)

We kick off this list of similar movies to Shooter with Harrison Ford’s The Fugitive, a movie in which he runs away from a plot that puts him at the center of his own wife’s murder. As he escapes from the law, he must confront some truths, as well as a restless Tommy Lee Jones.

Mission: Impossible (1996)

Brian De Palma kicked off the long-running action film series starring Tom Cruise with this 1996 blockbuster that has now been relegated to a footnote ever since Chris McQuarrie took over the last few movies.

But there is no Fallout without De Palma (and, especially, there is no Dead Reckoning without him), and if you are looking for similar movies to Shooter, having Tom Cruise run away from a government conspiracy and hunt down the people responsible for it is as close as you get.

In the meantime, it’s filled with so many iconic sequences that would define the entire franchise for two decades.

Enemy of the State (1998)

Will Smith is framed for murder after catching wind of a video tape that recorded a congressman being assassinated so that new surveillance legislation is allowed to be passed. Smith’s character must then clear his name, as well as put behind bars the people responsible for the actual killing.

If you are looking for some revenge story about clearing one’s name, much like Shooter was, this might be a good answer.

Training Day (2001)

2001’s Training Day may have a slightly different plot synopsis than the films above, but it’s coming from the same director of Shooter, so if you responded to his sensibilities there, you will likely enjoy what is arguably his best work yet.

The film, which earned Denzel Washington an Academy Award, follows two narcotics officers from the Los Angeles Police Department, played by Washington and Ethan Hawke, over a 24-hour period through some of the most dangerous areas of the city.

In the story, Washington’s character acts as a mentor figure to Hawke’s naïve rookie.

The Bourne Identity (2002)

If someone knows what it’s like to have your entire government start a worldwide chase against you, that’s Jason Bourne.

His story on the big screen kicked off with Doug Liman’s The Bourne Identity, which stars Matt Damon as the CIA agent who lost his memory in the middle of a mission. As he starts to recover it piece by piece, he realizes that both the people he was working for, and the criminals he was investigating, are zeroing in on him.

Hanna (2011)

After a lifelong trainment by her father, Hanna (Saoirse Ronan) is ready to take on her first big mission. The path she embarks on eventually forces her to run away from agents sent by Cate Blanchett’s villain, who has some past connections to Hanna’s father.

It is one of Ronan’s first big roles, and if you enjoyed similar movies to Shooter, chances are Hanna is just up your alley.

Jack Reacher (2012)

This is historic simply for being the first time Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie worked together as actor and director before the two made so many (great) Mission: Impossible movies together.

In Jack Reacher, Cruise plays the title character, a former Army investigator digging into a multiple-murder case, which gets more and more twisted the deeper he gets into it.

John Wick (2014)

John Wick was a big deal in 2014, a movie with next to no marketing that lit the box office on fire (as much as it could, given its limited reach and budget). It followed Keanu Reeves as the title character, a deadly assassin part of a clandestine organization that starts a revenge path after his wife passes away.

When his dog is later murdered, he can’t take it anymore and goes down a hunting path that will leave many bodies behind.

The Equalizer (2014)

Much like Training Day, The Equalizer shares similar sensibilities to Shooter because it hails from the same director.

It’s loosely based on the similarly-named TV series from the 1980s and follows Washington as an officer of the Defense Intelligence Agency who finds himself in charge of protecting a young prostitute from the Russian mafia.

The Commuter (2018)

One day, on his daily commute, Michael (Liam Neeson) meets a mysterious woman who forces him to take part in a conspiracy, which involves uncovering the identity of a hidden passenger who is on board the train he’s in. A deadly plan begins to unfold before his eyes, and he must rush to stop it before it’s too late.

When talking about similar movies to Shooter that deal with hidden conspiracies and even a race against time, The Commuter may be one to have an eye on.
