Based on the novel of the same name, Happiness for Beginners is a 2023 Netflix movie that is a gentle and romantic comedy.
The story follows Helen, recently divorced, and trying to find herself by hiking through The Appalachian Trail.
Initially an outsider to the group, Helen soon starts to endear herself to the other people on the trek and finds they all have various reasons for being there. Eventually, she meets and becomes romantically interested in Jake, however. The course of true love is never smooth, and Jake turns out to be the best friend of her younger brother.

Where was Happiness for Beginners filmed – A breakdown of filming locations
Stamford, Connecticut USA
The film is set in New York and Connecticut, so it makes sense that the filmmakers would do their best to film as much as possible on location.
Most of the movie would be filmed in Stamford, Connecticut, and Fairfield County, giving the film an air of authenticity, especially for viewers familiar with the area.
The city scenes before Helen goes on her trek to discover herself were shot in Stamford before shifting to the more rural areas that lie on the Appalachian Trail, where much of the story unfolds.
The Appalachian Trail
The trail passes through fourteen US states.
It might surprise you to know that the trail is a staggering 2109 miles long.
If you fancy going on the trek, you will need five to seven months to do the whole route.
However, there are shorter, more manageable hikes that you can attempt to manage on a weekend.
The trail begins in Springer Mountain, Georgia, and ends in Mount Katahdin in Maine.
The film has our characters on the trail, and the cast and crew were filmed on location there, too.
This creates an air of accuracy about the location, adding to the film’s overall feel.
