We discuss the ending of the 2023 Netflix film Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, which will contain significant spoilers.
Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is a humourous and bleak look at the current corporate working environment for many people out there. People want to be able to live their lives and not be part of toxic working environments and get underpaid.
Akira Tendo was excited to begin his new job until his boss overworked him and treated him poorly. Exactly one year later, he feels he has become trapped in this life and is a walking zombie working day in and day out. As he walks out of his apartment complex, he sees that there are zombies everywhere, which parallels how he has been feeling.
The film has great special effects and a fun concept once Tendo checks things off his bucket list before he inevitably gets bitten by a zombie. He wants to live his life while also preparing himself for the fact that he can’t be as free as he would like to be in this world.
Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead Ending Explained
Does Tendo become a zombie?
From the beginning of the film, the toxic work environment is in play, and the director Yûsuke Ishida shows the parallel of zombie life in the corporate workplace. In a way, being trapped in one way of life can make you a zombie without the bite, and that is what they were trying to show throughout the film.
The more he ventures out into this new world of freedom because of the zombie apocalypse, the more he holds onto the people he meets. The friends he makes have differing opinions because he wants to help others not turn into zombies but they think it’s better to keep to themselves. After finding out that one of his best friends was still alive and not a zombie he goes to visit him. They make up after they had a massive argument the last time they saw each other.
Tendo wants to do the right thing and try to save as many people as he can and deems himself the hero of the town he’s in. He plans to go to the Marine Paradise Aquarium because there are sharks that are there. He knows that there are shark suits that obviously protect those who go underwater to see them and protect them from shark attacks. He plans on using this suit to become the hero and not get bitten by zombies.
As he gets to the Aquarium he does complete his bucket list but he is thrown back into his toxic environment as he wakes up and meets Chief Kosugi. His employer treated him so poorly. Kosugi apparently runs the Aquarium the same way he ran the business. He lands himself in the same situation and is hired by Kosugi who works with him. The cycle unfortunately continues for Tendo.
What does Tendo do next?
After being treated horribly again, he does make a choice to leave the company and go off on his own. After defeating zombies and busting out of the Aquarium by helping others, he realizes he can do things on his own and become his own boss. His friends leave with him because they see he has the potential to be a great leader.
