Who is Isabella Guzman, and what did she do?

Isabella Guzman is an American living in the US state of Colorado. She was born in 1995. She gained notoriety on August 28, 2013, when the 18-year-old stabbed her mother, Yun Mi Hoy, 79 times on the upstairs floor of their Colorado house. Yun Mi Ho’s face, neck, and torso sustained heavy stabbing.

Isabella had a very bad relationship with her mother. Growing up, she lived in a poor household, so her mother couldn’t always afford many of the things that Isabella wanted. This led to several arguments in the house. Their relationship got worse when Isabella’s parents divorced, and Yun Mi Hoy later remarried. Things continued to worsen as Isabella issued death threats to both her mother and stepfather, which were reported to the police.

One night, Isabella went through with one of these threats and killed her mother.

As Isabella was 18 years old when she committed the crime, she was tried as an adult and charged with first-degree murder. However, a judge accepted a plea of insanity and found her not guilty. Isabella was sent to the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo.

This is where she remains until a court rules otherwise. The court has said that Isabella will remain in this institution until she no longer poses a threat to herself or society. In 2020 Isabella began to claim that she was healthy and wanted to re-enter society.

Isabella told CBS4 in 2020 that her sanity had been restored after 2013 and had been destroyed previously due to years of what she described as abuse from her family.

She said: “I was not myself when I did that, and I have since been restored to full health.

“I was abused at home by my family for many years. My parents are Jehovah’s Witnesses, and I left the religion when I was 14, and the abuse at home worsened after I quit.

“If I could change it or if I could take it back, I would.”

In 2023, Isabella Guzman is still in the mental health facility in Colorado.

After the incident, doctors later diagnosed Isabella with schizophrenia. Isabella had told investigators that voices inside her head had been controlling her. This factored into her plea of insanity, which the court recognized. Therefore, she was not guilty but would be put into a mental facility until she was no longer a danger to society.

According to Isabella, she thought the person she was stabbing was a woman named Cecilia. She said that she would never intentionally stab her mother.
