Summary
“The Sighted and the Seen” is a rather dull installment filled with wooden dialogue and complex, meandering narratives. This is a real step down from previous episodes, providing no real excitement or hooks in its plotting.
We recap the Apple TV+ series Foundation Season 2 Episode 5, “The Sighted and the Seen,” which contains spoilers.
Apple Original Foundation reaches the halfway point in its second season with “The Sighted and the Seen.”
In this installment, Hari (Jared Harris), Gaal (Lou Llobell), and Salvor (Leah Harvey) head to the planet of Ignis to seek out the hallowed Second Foundation while Brother Day (Lee Pace) messes with his fellow cloned brothers’ memories on Trantor.
Foundation Season 2 Episode 5 Recap
The episode begins aboard Salvor’s ship. Hari wakes up to a vision of his dead son Raych. The vision taunts him, saying that his plans will fail because he doesn’t care about human life.
Maybe that will all change now that he himself is human.
Hari checks that he is real by splashing water on his face and cutting himself. He can feel everything and bleeds real blood; he is, for all intents and purposes, a real person now.
Gaal and Salvor ask him about how he got into this predicament, but Hari is no help. He explains the circumstances that led to this strange occurrence, although he has a large gap in his memories.
He was guided into a cave by Kalle and then woke beside Gaal. Salvor thinks that he is a clone. The trio then crash land on Ignis.
Salvor leaves to assess the surroundings. She comes across her ex-lover Hugo Crast. He tells Salvor that he placed himself into cryosleep and synchronized his awakening time to the exact moment of Salvor’s own. Hugo then followed Salvor here.
Is Hugo Crast really alive?
They kiss and then head back to the ship. Hari doesn’t trust this stranger, though. He asks Gaal to hide the Prime Radiant and then questions Hugo. It turns out that Hari is right. This isn’t the real Hugo, but a vision instead, much like Raych was. The enemies attack, taking the trio hostage.
Meanwhile, on Trantor, Rue and Queen Sareth plot Brother Day’s demise. They meet with their informant Markley. He has been unable to gain access to the security footage from Day’s assassination attempt, though.
Sareth decides to seduce Day herself and explore his bedchamber in person.
An awkward foreplay follows as Sareth wanders the room, flirting with the Emperor. She sees the remnants of the battle and questions Brother Day further.
He realizes what is going on, and an argument ensues. Queen Sareth defends herself, stating that she wants to know if she will be safe here. But Brother Day sees through her lies.
What is Brother Dusk worried about?
Brother Day tells Demerzel that Sareth suspects him of murdering her family. Demerzel reassures Day that she has covered his trail and nothing will lead back to him. At the same time, Rue is in Brother Dusk’s quarters. They relive their romance from 30 years ago, re-watching old footage of their lovemaking. After this chat with Rue, Dusk is concerned about his own memories being so easily removed.
Using Markley, Rue, and Sareth are able to access memories from the day of the assassination attempt. They realize that Demerzel is a robot and agree that she was in the room during the attack.
After speaking with Demerzel in private, Brother Dusk worries that his memories are being wiped by Brother Day without his knowledge.
Dusk and Dawn visit the original king, Cleon I. They talk to the memory of Cleon I for answers, but he is unhelpful himself. He doesn’t seem interested in the fact that Brother Day is taking control of the other brothers’ memories.
Together Dawn and Dusk visit the memory database for further information. Dusk sees gaps in the data and worries that he is missing lots of his own memories now.
Back on Ignis, Hari, Salvor, and Gaal wake in their new prison. They are surprised to find that they can walk straight out of this jail, though.
They follow hushed whispers through the forest and are greeted by their enemy’s leader, Tellem Bond. The trio is offered food, and Salvor’s weapon is returned.
Who is Tellem Bond?
The real Tellem Bond (Rachel House) then reveals herself. She is the leader of this group, known as the metallics, those with the ability to read minds. She refers to the individuals with these senses and powers as the sighted. Ignis is a haven for the sighted, those who were prosecuted on their own planets and sought refuge here instead.
Foundation Season 2 Episode 5 Ending Explained
Hari realizes that the sighted pretended to be Raych and Hugo. Tellem wanted to understand why Hari had become human once again, but she was unable to figure it out herself via these visions.
She does know that Hari has a plan, though. They agreed to meet the next day to discuss this plan in more detail.
In private, Tellem orders her soldiers to find the Prime Radiant. She wants it destroyed so that the Second Foundation is never formed.
