Where is Elis Nelson Ortiz-Nieves Now? We discuss where the murderer of Giovanni Mejias is now. This article contains details that some readers will find disturbing.

Giovanni Mejias was only 4 years old when he was murdered and abused by Elis Nelson Ortiz-Nieves in June 2017. Giovanni was the son of Sonja Hernandez, Ortiz-Nieves’ then-girlfriend. She was convicted of second-degree child abuse and perjury.

It’s a crime that sent shockwaves throughout the wider community, especially due to the horrific nature of the act. Ortiz-Nieves will never see the outside of prison, with the presiding judge, Judge Mark Trusock, calling Ortiz-Nieves “the lowest form of human life that I’ve been able to observe or see.”

Who is Elis Nelson Ortiz-Nieves and what did he do?

Elis Nelson Ortiz-Nieves is a man from Michigan State, U.S.A. He was convicted of the murder and the abuse of the 4-year-old child Giovanni Mejias back in June 2017, and was sentenced to life in prison. Giovanni Mejias was the son of his then-girlfriend, Sonja Hernandez.

The pair started a relationship together in December 2016, and Ortiz-Nieves would eventually meet Giovanni and Hernandez’s other children. Ortiz-Nieves would start abusing Giovanni, and on June 13, 2017, Giovanni would die because of this abuse. He was in a mobile home with six other children at the time of Giovanni’s murder.

At Ortiz-Nieves’ trial, the children testified in court that both Hernandez and Ortiz-Nieves would beat, kick, and whip them.

The pair are no longer in a relationship together.

Where is Elis Nelson Ortiz-Nieves Now?

In January 2018, the then 25-year-old Elis Nelson Ortiz-Nieves was sentenced for the crime of murdering and abusing Giovanni Mejias. Judge Mark Trusock gave the Michigan man a mandatory life in prison without the chance for parole for the murder, and 80 to 150 years in prison for first-degree child abuse.

Ortiz-Nieves will never see the outside of prison walls ever again, and he will die in a jail cell. In 2023, Ortiz-Nieves’ sentence has barely begun, meaning he has many more years ahead of him in jail.

At his sentencing hearing, Ortiz-Nieves continued to protest his innocence, claiming he didn’t abuse or fatally injure Giovanni Mejias, but instead, he was trying to help him. Ortiz-Nieves has even set up a dedicated Facebook group and Instagram account to continue to argue his case. One post is addressed to Kim Kardashian, where he pleaded with her to help him with his case.

Hernandez was sentenced to 57 months to ten years in jail, after being convicted of second-degree child abuse and perjury. She seemed to show some remorse at her sentencing, saying “I lied under oath for a man I thought loved and cared for me.”

How did Giovanni Mejias die?

On June 13, 2017, Giovanni Mejias was abused by Elis Nelson Ortiz-Nieves. He hit the boy in the stomach, and he died. When police arrived, they found that the boy had other, older injuries such as bruising and fractured ribs which showed prior abuse.

An autopsy later showed that Giovanni had died of internal bleeding caused by an abdominal tear.
