The Wheel of Time Season 2 Review and Plot Summary

Season 2 starts several months after Rand (Josha Stradowski) and Aes Sedai Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) confront and seemingly defeat the Dark One at the Eye of the World.

Moiraine and her Warder, Lan (Daniel Henney), have been hiding at an inn run by channeler sisters Verin (Meera Syal) and Adeleas (Nila Aalia), while Egwene (Madeleine Madden) and Nygaene are both novices at the tower.

Since disappearing, Rand has been living in Foregate, in the city of Cairhien, has a new love interest, innkeeper Selene, and took a job at the local Sanitarium to care for the old and frail. Mat (Dónal Finn) starts the season as a prisoner at the White Tower, while Perrin (Marcus Rutherford) is on a quest to retrieve the Horn of Valere.

The first half of season 2 centers on the aftermath of Rand’s confrontation at the Eye of the Earth. That wasn’t the final battle, far from it. And now, the whole world is about to face a level of darkness we’ve yet to see.

On the bright side (pun intended), more Dark One means more scenes with Fares Fares, who is excellent as the charismatic villain and steals the spotlight every time he appears on the screen. The rest of the cast is also excellent, particularly Rosamund Pike as the secretive Aes Sedai.

Aside from the bigger picture and the looming battle, the series also takes the time to allow viewers to emotionally connect to these characters. For example, we learn more about the history between Moiraine and Lan, which makes their estrangement even more devastating. And even Liandrin (Kate Fleetwood) gets a (somewhat) sympathetic storyline.

Nynaeve’s journey this season stands out as particularly compelling. Her character arc is as heartbreaking as it gets, so it will be interesting to see where they go from here.

Season 2 does introduce a whole heap of new characters on top of an already large cast, so keeping up with who’s who can be challenging. This is quite a complex show, but it all seems to tie in together nicely.
