Summary

“CoBro” is another solid installment from the series. The show interconnects clever clues with witty one-liners to make an entertaining half hour of TV. Matthew Broderick’s hilarious guest spot steals the show, though, as he plays an intense, extreme version of himself.

We recap the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building Season 3 Episode 7, “CoBro,” which contains significant spoilers.

The investigation into Ben Glenroy’s murder has led to the breakup of the magical trio. Oliver (Martin Short) has alienated himself further with his unwavering dedication to the musical, while Mabel (Selena Gomez) feels like she’s outgrown the two old gents at long last.

In “CoBro,” the trio tries to go it alone with new acquaintances, while Ben’s brother Dickie (Jeremy Shamos) becomes the latest lead suspect.

Only Murders in the Building Season 3 Episode 7 Recap

The seventh installment begins with a narration from one of the Arconia’s oldest residents, Uma Heller (Jackie Hoffman). She talks about her kleptomania and obsession with collecting other people’s items.

This leads to Uma coming into possession of Ben’s handkerchief from the elevator crime scene. Uma finds herself sitting opposite Charles at the local diner in the present. Charles is eating alone now that he’s fallen out with both Oliver and Mabel. Uma and Charles get talking to one another. She admits to nabbing the handkerchief.

Meanwhile, Mabel packs up, ready to leave the Arconia for good. Old pal Theo helps her pack. Together, they discuss the case in more detail. Theo suggests questioning Ben’s brother Dickie for more information.

Dickie is currently running an auction of Ben’s CoBro items in the penthouse upstairs.

Why was Dickie angry with Ben?

The duo crashes this auction. Dickie is angered by Mabel’s interrogation and refuses to help her out. Later, Mabel apologizes. This causes Dickie to open up a little more. He mentions how he always lived in Ben’s shadow. Dickie was always cleaning up Ben’s messes. He seems bitter and jealous of Ben’s successes. Is that a motive, I hear?

Mabel explains how she wants to reopen the case to find Ben’s murderer. Dickie is convinced that Gregg, Ben’s stalker, is the killer, though. But Mabel doesn’t believe it one bit. Dickie states that the police have proof that Gregg was in the building on the night of Ben’s death.

Elsewhere, Oliver pushes on with his musical, hoping to recast Charles’ role. Unfortunately, all of the auditions are just plain awful. Producer Cliff phones in a favor and lands Broadway star Matthew Broderick, who plays a fictionalized version of himself.

Charles eavesdrops, listening in as Matthew Broderick wows Oliver and the producers. Matthew lands the role immediately and gets to work right away. He’s intense, though, desperate to inhabit the character and really delve into the psyche of the constable.

Who has Ben’s handkerchief?

Fearing that he’ll never be friends with Oliver again, Charles gets desperate. He hopes that by providing a new clue in the case, he can win his friends back. Charles rushes over to Uma’s apartment to retrieve the handkerchief. But Uma has already sold it. Later we discover that Dickie is the one who bought the bloody hankie from Uma; it is now in his possession.

While packing up, Mabel notices one of her crime scene photos, which includes Ben’s watch. Dickie told her that Ben would make sure his watch was always set 20 minutes earlier.

This means that Ben died later than expected. In turn, this means that Gregg can’t be the killer as he wasn’t even in the building when Ben died.

What are Dickie’s motives?

With the new evidence, Mabel, Theo, and Tobert prepare for their first podcast recording. As they set up, Theo notices another clue. It would seem Dickie was the one who came up with the CoBro film franchise in the first place. Ben just stole his idea. Mabel believes that this is another motive. Dickie is quickly becoming her new lead suspect, he was jealous of Ben’s successes and bitter that his brother stole the limelight and his ideas.

Back at Oliver’s apartment, Matthew won’t stop rehearsing and fine-tuning his role. This drives Oliver insane. He drags Matthew out of his building. When he opens the door, Oliver finds Charles lurking on the other side.

Only Murders in the Building Season 3 Episode 7 Ending Explained

Oliver apologizes to Charles for the way he has treated him and rehires him on the spot. Poor Matthew is sacked after one day’s work. Thankfully, Oliver and Charles are back to being the best of friends. They discuss the stolen handkerchief.

Then Oliver shows Charles the book of news clippings found in Loretta’s apartment. They decide to hand this over to Mabel as a peace offering.

The episode ends with Charles and Oliver knocking on Mabel’s door. But she’s already moved out. Then, they receive an alert. Mabel has sent out a teaser for her new podcast. Surprisingly, she’s used their old name. The duo is shocked to see Mabel working without them. The police listen to Mabel’s teaser trailer and decide to reopen the murder case because of all the new evidence.
