Monster High: The Movie, was the first live-action musical movie out of the budding franchise, and was released in 2022. The story follows Clawdeen, who begins attending Monster High and discovers a devious plot that would not only destroy her school but also reveal her half-human, half-werewolf identity. Whilst the movie is aimed at children to teens, it also has a dedicated adult fanbase, so much so a second film was quickly released in October 2023. In this article, we discuss Monster High 2’s plot and the chances of a Monster High 3.
The musical-fantasy films are directed by Todd Holland and are produced by the television division of Mattel and Brightlight Pictures. Interestingly, this is part of a 13-year-old franchise, which has seen multiple TV specials based on Mattel’s popular toys.
Monster High 2 Plot Explained:
In Monster High 2 (which is available for streaming on Paramount+) our three main protagonists enter sophomore year at Monster High. Here their powers are put to the test as they face even bigger challenges. Not only do they have to deal with new students, new powers, and evolving friendships, but an even bigger threat arrives that could change their world and break their bonds. The film has a political theme and agenda, as old traditions and modern politics are brought into the storyline.
The plot starts with Draculaura hosting a party to start the best year ever. Clawdeen is now famous on EekTok Video and has everyone’s attention, even though she claims she doesn’t want it.

The gang goes back to school, where they meet Toralei Stripe, a werecat who doesn’t approve of half-monsters. Stripe heightens worries with stories about evil witches, and resurfacing old feuds between witches and vampires.
Draculaura is drawn into a witch’s plot to rid the world of vampires, and her friends from Monster High have to come to her rescue, trying to survive the ordeal themselves.
In this second installment Miia Harris, Ceci Balagot, and Nayah Damasen reprise their roles as Clawdeen, Frankie, and Draculaura, as well as Case Walker, Marci T. House, Jy Prishkulnik, Lina Lecompte, Justin Derickson, Lilah Fitzgerald, and Nasiv Sall reprising their supporting roles.
Will there be a Monster High 3?
The answer to whether there will be a Monster High 3 is a strong maybe.
In the final scene before the credits open up to the possibility of a third film the Grim Reaper appears at Monster High looking for Frankie and inadvertently Clawdeen, since it was Frankie who revived her. So we could have a plot where Frankie is in trouble with the Grim Reaper, and follow that aspect.
However, at the time of writing this, nothing has been confirmed in terms of a third film. In 2022, an announcement was made in late October for the second film, so keep your eyes peeled.
Is there interest in a third movie in the franchise?
After research, the second fantasy-musical is scoring 5/10 on IMDb, and 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, with many fans saying the film was too long and does not do the characters true justice through bland costumes and makeup, which is not what the toys are about. Some critics have called the film “bland”, with others implying it had “Disney Channel vibes”, losing its originality and authenticity.
Whilst there is still a big fan base, and after the success of other films about Mattel toys recently (Barbie), this film is aimed at such a small portion of audiences, I do think if they make a third film, it will be to tie off any loose ends and finish the live-action franchise. It’s always nice to have a trilogy — the power of three is strong in the film industry, so if you’re a fan, don’t lose hope.
