Apple TV+ is certainly looking at being innovative with its films, and Fingernails, a 2023 sci-fi romantic drama, is sure to intrigue audiences and critics. You might be wondering about the premise behind a romantic film that strays into sci-fi, and I am sure that you could probably think of a couple off the top of your head, but let’s just say, it isn’t the most obvious genre to work on, and the premises raises some interesting questions. Among them is where Fingernails was filmed.

The film appears to take place in some kind of future, not too far ahead of our own, but with some ideas that seem possible, but are more improbable. The particular McGuffin in Fingernails is equipment that can analyze fingernails and decide whether the couples they belong to are a good match or not.

If you are a fan of Black Mirror, then Fingernails may give you a similar sort of vibe.

Think of some of the more grounded episodes of that show that blends the world we live in with sci-fi concepts that feel just around the corner, and you kind of get the tone of Fingernails.

The film had its international premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and is also looking at a limited theatrical release on October 27, and will begin streaming on Apple TV+ starting on November 3.

Where was the Apple TV+ film Fingernails filmed? A breakdown of locations

Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Hamilton is a port city in the Canadian province of Ontario that has a population of around 569,360. A report on Canada Today would reveal that the film had started production in Hamilton, in December of 2022.

Canada is known as The Hollywood of the North as so many productions now take place there, rather than in the US. It appears that one of the main factors for this is, of course, money. There are many financial benefits of filming there, including very appealing tax breaks and low filming costs.

There is a high exchange rate between the American and Canadian dollar, and that rate helps keep production costs down, leading to many productions being filmed there.

Toronto, Canada

More location work was done in Toronto, and again. a lot of US productions film here, mainly for the financial aspects, but also due to the nature of Toronto and its locations.

US producers have found that with the right set dressing and some skillful cinematography, Toronto can double for many US cities including New York, Boston, and Washington.

Toronto has also been used for doubling up for European countries such as Paris and London.

Ajio Sushi Korean and Japanese Restaurant, Hamilton

It seems that in a more localized location, the film crew was spotted recording some scenes at Ajio Sushi Korean and Japanese Restaurant in Hamilton.

Situated at 161 King Street, East Hamilton, the restaurant is a very popular destination for lovers of Japanese and Korean food.

Sana Grill, Hamilton

Again reported in Canada Today, it seems one restaurant was not enough for the film crew who were also spotted at Sana Grill on the same street in Hamilton, next door to the previous location.

The specialty at this venue is chicken and steak shawarma, which is cooked using an old family recipe, and I wonder if you are getting hungry reading this list.

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, Glanbrook, Ontario

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is no stranger to filming and has been the site for many previous productions including adverts, documentaries, music videos, and of course movies.

The incredible facility has a collection of over forty aircraft, some static and some airworthy and these are also available to use as props.

The area covers an impressive 108,000 square feet and also has access to several unique rooms and stairways, with window and door styles that can be utilized for filming, as well as direct access to a large airside aircraft parking ramp.

Worth a visit if you are in the area, and you can find it at 9280 Airport Road, Mount Hope, Ontario.
