Prime Video‘s sci-fi thriller Awareness takes a lot of cues from the superhero genre, including leaving fans wondering if there will be a sequel. The film has had some mixed reviews so far, but there are a few fans out there who believe that there is more mileage to the story and the world the creative team is trying to build. To them, a sequel to Awareness is not only desirable but necessary. But is there any real chance of us seeing Awareness 2 any time soon?
The story follows teenager Ian played by Carlos Scholz, and is pretty much an origin story for the character, as we learn about his powers and the effect they have on his world and the people that inhabit it.
The Spanish-language film premiered at the 26th Málaga Film Festival in March.
Awareness (2023) Plot Explained
The film follows Ian, a teenager who has the superhero-like power to project illusions into the minds of others.
Ian lives with his father, and they scrape by, running scams that allow them to get through the week, but during one particular heist, things get out of hand, and they find themselves noticed by a mysterious agency that sends an agent after them who seems to have the same powers as Ian.
The Agency explains that they need Ian’s help to stop the Awareness, a clandestine society that seems to control the government.
This leads to a complicated narrative, as we explore the complexities of the world that Ian operates in, and the characters that inhabit it.
Will there be a sequel to Awareness?
At the time of writing, there is no official confirmation of a sequel to Awareness, but there does seem to be an indication that the filmmakers are hoping for a chance to explore this world more.
If the film spikes quite dramatically and the numbers inspire Amazon to green-light a sequel it would still be quite some time before we get to see it.
The film does have a lot of special effects required, including CGI and fight sequences, and these all add time to production, so even if they get their skates on, it would probably be 2025 before the film appears.
With all the talk of superhero fatigue, and films such as The Flash, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and Ant-Man: Quantumania underperforming, you do have to wonder if this genre is on the decline, so a sequel to Awareness may not seem like an option just now.
What could be the plot for Awareness 2?
Awareness ends with a suggestion that the makers have at some point envisaged this as the start of a franchise.
In the final scene, we see Ian is about to drive off with Ester, but in a twist, we see he is not the only one with an implanted imaginary friend.
The mysterious American who kept giving Adriana the order to kill Ian is revealed to be a loop inside her head, suggesting that there is more to come from this universe.
Adriana also tries to recruit Ian in the war against Awareness, so there is no doubt that the sequel would see some way of pursuing that plot too.
At this point, though, there is no confirmation of a sequel, but you never know. We’ll keep this article updated with any new information as soon as we get it.
