The 2023 Hindi-language spy thriller Khufiya is now available to stream on Netflix. This original movie from famed Indian director Vishal Bhardwaj (Makdee and Haider) has already managed to become one of the most-watched films in India this year, after only debuting on the platform on October 5th. With such a huge, early success, will Netflix be eyeing up a potential sequel, a Khufiya 2? Let’s explore the sequel possibilities for Khufiya in more detail.

This article of course contains spoilers.

What is Khufiya about?

The Netflix original Khufiya is a suspenseful Indian drama movie about operative Krishna Mehra (Tabu), who works for the intelligence agency R&AW (Research and Analysis Wing). She is tasked with tracking down a mole, who is working inside the R&AW. This mole is selling defense secrets, hence the film’s title, which translates to Secret in English.

Throughout the movie, Krishna Mehra struggles with her conflicted assignment and many other issues in her own work and private life. She finds her secret identity to be a problem, whilst she grapples with a sexual awakening and a strained relationship with her son.

The film is based on true events and is an adaptation of the espionage novel Escape to Nowhere, written by Amar Bhushan. The novel was adapted by director Vishal Bhardwaj and writer Rohan Narula.

Will there be a Khufiya 2?

There has been no announcement yet from Netflix about any planned sequels to the movie Khufiya. There is also currently no sequel in development at the streaming company as it stands. So, the chances of viewers getting a Khufiya 2 are quite low at this point in time.

Netflix are known to produce sequels to their most popular original movies. They have already released hotly anticipated follow-ups in the past, such as Murder Mystery 2, Glass Onion, Extraction 2, and a trilogy of To All the Boys films. But I don’t think there have been as many foreign language sequels.

Khufiya has been popular internationally, but it is nowhere to be seen in the top ten charts in the UK or the USA. It just hasn’t been as successful in those countries, which might stop Netflix from rushing into production on a sequel overall.

That being said, the Asian market is a large and lucrative one, so it might be a missed opportunity if Netflix weren’t to capitalize on Khufiya’s successes in its home nation. Globally, according to Netflix’s official Top TenKhufiya is fifth on the list of top ten non-English films and has been viewed for 13,200,000 hours.

What could be the plot for Khufiya 2?

If Netflix changes its mind and puts a sequel into production, Khufiya 2 could focus on the aftermath of the first movie. Krishna Mehra has come out to her son and has explained the reasons for her divorce from his father. The sequel could explore Krishna’s attempts to reconnect with her estranged son, whilst taking on a new case.

As the film is adapted from a novel, one that explores true stories of Indian spies, there is lots of scope for a possible sequel. Vishal Bhardwaj could concentrate on any of the country’s most enticing espionage storylines moving forward, placing Krishna in the center of the next story, whatever that may be.
