Netflix horror-comedy The Conference is a sly and slightly satirical slasher that takes all the usual tropes of the genre and at least does its best to subvert them slightly. This is another Nordic shocker that works hard to build the world that the characters live in, and as a result, we get a cast that manages to break convention, acting unpredictably, embracing Nordic noir, and using it to the film’s advantage. Here, we explore if the horror film was filmed on location.
The cast is on one of those team-building weekend retreats where they have to work together and help build their workplace relationships, but as these things sometimes go, they start to turn on each other, and just as you think things can’t get any worse, they do, with an unknown killer on the loose taking them down in a series of bizarre murders.
So far there have been some mixed reviews of the movie, but horror fans are taking to the mix of fun and thrills.
Where was The Conference filmed? A breakdown of locations
Sweden
This Swedish film is an adaptation of the novel by Mats Strandberg and features many well-known Swedish actors such as Adam Lundgren, Eva Melander, Bahar Pars, Amed Bozan, Maria Sid, and Katia Winter.
The opening shots on location feature plenty of open Swedish landscapes as we meet the cast who have been working on their new project, opening the new Kolarangen Shopping Centre.
The bleak landscapes of the opening shots, including the holiday village they will be staying at, set the scene for what is still to come. The grey skies and muted color palate all add to the tone of the film and it’s safe to say that the filming was all done in Sweden.
Stockholm
Location work for the film was quite important with a lot of the action happening outside in the woods around the holiday village, which also incorporates a river that runs through the area.
Stockholm does in fact stretch across fourteen islands where Lake Malaren flows into the Baltic Sea. It may be parts of Lake Malaren that we see in the film.
The Conference does rely on the one location, where the holiday village is situated, and everything plays out in and around this area, and it looks as if much of the location work was studio-based.
SF Studios
SF Studios was heavily involved in the film’s production.
Based in Stockholm, the busy company also has international offices in Oslo, London, Helsinki, and Copenhagen. SF Studios is the largest in Sweden, established in 1919, and is the leading distributor of films and TV series in the Nordic countries.
It makes sense that this studio was used for much of the filming, and if you recognize the name, it may be from other films and series such as Troll, Red Dot, and Loving Adults. The studio is also behind the Danish drama Ehrengard: The Art of Seduction.
If you are a native of Sweden and spotted any landmarks, let us know in the comments below, we love hearing from location spotters who have helped us out in pinpointing other international filming locations.
