The Burning Girls is the provocatively titled TV series from Paramount+ that was based on the novel of the same name by C.J. Tudor and adapted for television by Camilla Ahlgren and Hans Rosenfeldt, the Swedish screenwriter who was also behind the massively popular genre breaker The Bridge. If you fancy a look around the countryside of the UK looking for scary locations, grab a notepad and jot down our notes on where The Burning Girls was filmed.

The show stars Samantha Morton and Ruby Stokes, and is a folk horror story, reveling in the very British undercurrents of secrets and superstition layered deeply within a quintessentially UK country town.

The spooky and unnerving shocker is perfect to curl up with on a rain-swept winter’s night and has all the elements that you could wish for in such a show. Hidden secrets, hostile locals, a cursed and grisly history, and everyone doing their best to be both homely and sinister at the same time make for a Wickerman-style scary show that will delight fans of the genre.

Where was the Paramount+ series The Burning Girls filmed? A breakdown of locations

England, UK

The show is very specific to England in the UK, so it was important that the production team could source and locate the appropriate locations that suited the style of the show.

Middle England has many small and picturesque villages, and in the past shows such as The Avengers, Broadchurch, and Doctor Who would feature these types of small rural towns that usually have a deadly and sinister secret behind their veneer.

The Burning Girls manages to capture that feeling and the use of superb locations helps sell the story.

Buckinghamshire, England

Buckinghamshire is in the South East of England and is divided into two districts, Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes.

Milton Keynes is a city that historically had different borders that included the town of Slough, featured in Ricky Gervais’s The Office, but is now regarded as part of Berkshire.

Stokenchurch, Buckinghamshire

A report in the Bucks Free Press would extensively cover the location filming done in the village and would reveal that the Stokenchurch Community Centre was transformed into a police station for the production.

The production team was spotted painting the guttering and window frames of the center blue and adding a sign to set dress the building to represent the police station.

Residents of the area would receive notice that filming would be taking place on November 11th, 2022 between 9 am and noon on that day.

Farnham Common, Stokenchurch

This area of the village was also used for filming, and residents would notice the crew filming there, for some outdoor location work.

West London Studio, London

In an interview for Definition, cinematographer Dale Elena McCready revealed that studio space was used for certain shots in the production.

McCready would mention, “We didn’t really use virtual production in the series, but there was some comping and green-screen work,” and it was most likely that this work would have been done in West London Studios.
