Viewers have gone wild over Stephen Graham’s new series Bodies after it was released on Netflix. This crime drama has become an instant hit, with fans and critics commending Graham for his incredible work. This police procedural with a twist, which takes place in multiple distinct time periods, has fans wondering where the series was filmed to create the desired time-hopping effect. Below, we have all the answers in a complete breakdown of the locations used.
When a body – the same body – is found on Longharvest Lane in London’s East End in 1890, 1941, 2023, and 2053, one detective from each period must investigate. The show is based on the mind-bending graphic novel by Si Spencer and follows the story of four detectives in four different time periods of London who find themselves investigating the same murder. So there are four timelines and one body. It’s set across a period from 1890 to 2053 and sees the same murder happening multiple times over the 150-year span.
Where was Bodies on Netflix filmed? A Breakdown of Locations
Bodies is set in London, with the body in question being found on Longharvest Lane. Viewers will be interested to know that East End Street is actually fictional. A lot of the scenes were filmed in Sheffield and much of the series was filmed in Leeds.
Writer Paul Tomalin said of filming there: “It was my first time shooting in Leeds and it’s great. The people are wonderful. It’s got really great food and I really enjoyed working with the crew there. The sets they built and the locations, not just in Leeds but also in places like Bradford and Rotherham, were amazing.”
With London becoming incredibly difficult and expensive to film in, it’s no wonder shows are making their way up north.
Bradford
The filming in Bradford took place in Lister Mills, City Hall, Salts Mill, and Burnett Street in Little Germany. Lister Mills stands in for the 2050 setting, with the cast and crew seen on the Beamsley Road side of Lister Mills while filming was underway.
Rotherham
In Rotherham, filming took place at the stately home Wentworth Woodhouse. This Grade I listed country house was rebuilt from an original Jacobean house by Thomas Watson-Wentworth. It has now been taken over by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust and is currently undergoing a major restoration. The house is open to visit for anyone wanting to have a nosey around.
Sheffield
The scenes of Longharvest Lane and the surrounding area were shot in Sheffield. Sheffield is a popular town and has had both big and small screen hits like The Full Monty, Everyone’s Talking About Jamie, and Doctor Who shot at locations across the city, from Sheffield’s famous Park Hill flats to an old industrial site near the shopping center Meadowhall.
Grimsby Docks
Grimsby docks and The Kasbah were used for filming locations. The Kasbah is known as “a town within a town,” which was developed in the 1870s to serve the expanding fishing port. This town has many different streets and buildings and isn’t heavily populated, making it an ideal place to film.
Hull
Hull Old Town and Princes Quay shopping center were used in the filming of Bodies. At one point, Hull Live reports extras were seen waving Union Jacks and English flags, shooting what appeared to be a protest scene, with actors also posing as policemen in riot gear.
Bolton
Le Mans Crescent was used for filming — this iconic street has been used as a set for multiple films and TV series in recent years including Peaky Blinders, It’s A Sin, and The Stranger.
Leeds
There are a lot of reports of the series being filmed in Leeds, but no specific locations have been revealed. The main thing to take away is this series might be set in London, but was filmed in the good old North.
