An average episode that wants to advance the plot but does not do a very good job of it.
Although Naofumi’s latest encounter with the other heroes didn’t go well in Episode 4, in the end, he did manage to fulfill his mission of enlisting the Spear hero’s help. Whether or not he’ll be enough remains to be seen, but it’s a decent start considering how volatile their relationship has been in the past. Now, Episode 15 of Crunchyroll’s The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3 has plenty of time to focus on training and getting stronger as they slowly prepare for the upcoming battle with the Phoenix.
Though not exactly filler, the episode doesn’t feel that cohesive either. It seemed like this episode tried to accomplish a lot and progress characters along while cutting corners, almost like a half-finished montage. Naofumi’s party is attacked, which is the clear highlight, and while some details may be important down the line, there wasn’t much in the way of thrills or even much drama.
The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3 Episode 5 Recap
The episode opens with Naofumi, Raphtalia, and Filo taking an alternate cart to avoid Motoyasu following them or bothering Filo. As they travel back home, they are attacked by a pair of hooded men with immense magical powers.
After dropping a massive meteor on Naofumi’s party doesn’t kill them, the men attempt to attack again. This time, S’yne intercedes, and Raphtalia is able to defeat the two attackers.
Who attacked Naofumi’s party?
Although he accuses them of working together, S’yne says the men who attacked Naofumi’s party are people from her world. It appears they are from the same destroyed world as S’yne, who was once a vassal weapon hero.
Naofumi takes any villager who has reached level 40 to obtain class upgrades. He tells the kids to make sure they choose paths that they want to pursue in the future.
After acquiring upgrades and weapons, Naofumi plans to take his party, the white tiger siblings, and keel out hunting.
How does The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3 Episode 5 end?
Eclair warns Naofumi to look out for the Three Heroes Church, as they could have something to do with the slavers that attacked Lurolona Village.
Naofumi decides they will look for the slavers’ hideout while on their hunt. After splitting up, Naofumi stumbles across Motoyasu and Rem, who is wearing new gear, battling in the forest.
While this week’s episode wasn’t bad, it felt like it lacked the momentum of the first few. Even after the opening fight, it never really seemed to pick back up again.
There were complaints about last season being slow, but here’s hoping whatever conflict the show is trying to rush towards turns out to be worth it.
