Will there be a Season 2 of All the Light We Cannot See?

The Netflix drama series All the Light We Cannot See is expected to be another successful release for the streaming giants, considering the actors involved and the overwhelming strength of the source material. This four-part series is an adaptation of Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning war novel after all. It may be a likely hit for Netflix, but it hasn’t been well-received by the critics so far. With this setback in mind, will Netflix be eager to renew the series for Season 2?

Written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) and directed by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things), All the Light We Cannot See follows blind French girl Marie-Laure LeBlanc (Aria Mia Loberti), who we find deserted and utterly alone in the heavily bombed city of Saint-Malo in 1944.

Marie spends her days searching for food and then at night, she broadcasts an illegal radio show, as an excuse to reach out to her missing father Daniel (Mark Ruffalo), and uncle Etienne (Hugh Laurie), who are yet to return to her. It is also a way for the French to send out cryptic messages to their allies.

This secret broadcast is listened to by German soldier Werner Pfennig (Louis Hofmann), a genius radio operator, who is tasked with hunting Marie down. There is also a Sergeant Major after Marie. Reinhold von Rumpel (Lars Eidinger) is hellbent on finding Marie for his own selfish reasons. All of this occurs amidst a relentless bombing in the closed-off city of Saint-Malo.

Will Marie be able to survive the explosions and the death threats long enough to be reunited with her father and uncle?

Official Renewal Status: TBC

All the Light We Cannot See has been advertised as a limited series by Netflix, so it is highly unlikely that it will ever be renewed for a second season. Netflix has yet to make any announcements regarding the renewal of the show, but it seems doubtful that they will make any changes to this in the foreseeable future.

The show wraps up its entire plot by the end of its four-episode run, but as always there is still room for interpretation and the potential for further storylines to follow. Interestingly, the novel this miniseries is based upon ends completely differently from the series, jumping forward in time to almost the present day. But even when you take this into consideration, it still feels as though Netflix only had one season in mind.

Renewals mainly depend on the popularity of the show and the overall consensus from viewers and critics alike. To date, the series hasn’t fared too well with critical reviews, but it could still be a hit for Netflix in time, connecting with its core audience. If the show is a runaway hit, then the possibilities of a second season are largely increased somewhat.

The show has visual flair and includes a killer cast, so there is potential. It’s also worth mentioning the German talents involved. It’s great to see Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front) and of course, Dark’s Louis Hofmann making their big Hollywood, English-language debuts.

This Netflix original does have the scope for a follow-up, yet we’re going to predict that it will remain as a one-off series and will not be renewed for a second season. As always, we will keep you posted on any updates in the pending renewal of All the Light We Cannot See.
