Given the streaming platform’s recent successes with animated game adaptations, it’s only right to wonder if Onimusha will return for Season 2, especially with major success stories like Castlevania having paved the way. Onimusha is an adventure animated series from Netflix that has captured the feel of the original premise and expands on it, however there is currently no word about a potential second season.

Based on the now legendary video game franchise of the same name, the show was written by Hideyuki Kirata and has Takashi Miike and Shinya Sugai working as directors.

Has Onimusha been renewed for Season 2?

At the time of writing, Onimusha has not been officially renewed for Season 2. However, do keep in mind the series only dropped on November 2nd, 2023, so it is still early days yet.

We do not doubt that the higher-ups will be looking carefully at the reception the show receives, and the all-important watch time of the series, before deciding to invest in another run of episodes.

Currently, Onimusha has an impressive score of 7.5/10 on IMDb, with some reviewers praising the faithful adaptation of the original property. The fan reaction on social media has been a little more mixed, but the general consensus seems to be a positive one, even if franchise fans are lamenting the absence of Samanosuke:

We will of course keep you updated on any news as soon as we have it, but we imagine it may be a while before any renewal news is leaked.

What studio is behind Onimusha?

The studio behind the Onimusha adaptation is Sublimation.

The company was formed in 2011 and has continually worked to build a portfolio of work including Hirune Hime and Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Love Warriors.

The Sublimation Company expanded quickly and now has three studios across Japan located in Mikata, Nagoya, and Sendai.

The series was directed by Takashi Miike and focuses on Miyamoto Musashi, who is modeled after Toshiro Mifune, the Japanese film icon known around the world.

What can we expect from Onimusha Season 2?

The original game would have six releases that were made up of four main games and two spin-offs, so there is a lot of scope and material for further seasons of the show to be inspired by.

Fans of the show do seem to be generally impressed by the adaptation, so we hope that the creators manage to stay on track, faithfully looking at the original material and improving on the more obvious problems of the first season, including the problems with the inconsistent animation style and the mix of 2D and 3D animation often becoming jarring. However, these are issues that could be rectified in a second run.

The impressive, but flawed, first season bodes well for a continuation of the property.
