As The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3 continues the hunt Naofumi’s party embarked on in Episode 5, it’s clear that there’s more going on in this forest than expected. While it’s easy to guess why Motoyasu might be nearby, figuring out Ren’s motive for attacking the spear hero will be more challenging. What was supposed to be a routine trip quickly turns into another dangerous adventure as we continue with Episode 6 of the popular Crunchyroll series.
This unexpected but much-needed look into Ren’s past makes for one of the more compelling episodes of the season thus far.
The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3 Episode 6 Recap
The episode opens with a flashback to Ren before he was transferred to Raphtalia’s world. Although lacking in friends, he seems to be known around school and online for his videogame prowess. However, his overconfidence in games eventually leads to him getting his entire party killed fighting the Tortoise spirit.
After joining forces with Malty, Ren convinces himself that his streak of bad luck is over and that she is a worthy party member.
Who robs Ren?
Despite trusting her enough to add to his party, Ren awakens the following day to find Malty has robbed him. The only thing that she leaves behind is a note saying that he is useless and she no longer needs him.
Outside, Ren is attacked by a group of hooded men. When he begins struggling against them unexpectedly, he flees and hides in the house of a random villager. He thinks she will give him refuge for being a hero, but she kicks him out for not protecting the people from the Tortoise spirit.
After fleeing again, only to be berated by a party in the nearby forest, Ren flies into a blind rage and declares he is going to kill them. He attacks them and steals a mask from one of the members instead.
Motoyaso discovers Ren in the forest and begins fighting with him. Moments later, Naofumi walks up, confused by why Ren is there. He then realizes Ren is using a weapon from the Curse series.
As Ren attempts to kill Naofumi, his hunting party appears. Éclair requests to fight the Sword Hero alone and attempts to snap him out of it to no avail.
How does The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3 Episode 6 end?
Ren’s greed grows stronger, spreading and causing the ground around them to crack and spawn monsters. With a final blow, Éclair defeats Ren, and everything spawned by his curse disappears.
Suddenly, the hooded men who attacked Ren earlier appear, and Naofumi recognizes them as the men from S’yne’s world. He fears they may be too tired to fight them now, but Motoyasu kills them both easily.
Éclair offers Ren the chance to train and grow stronger with her, and he agrees.
While I wasn’t expecting a flashback sequence in this episode, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Considering how awful the other heroes have been in the past, it can be hard to like them at times. This episode helped to add more depth to Ren’s character, showing different sides and humanizing him a bit.
The storytelling felt a little cleaner and more cohesive in this episode. It flowed well, making it easier to immerse yourself in than a few others before it.
Overall, it was one of the better episodes this season. If the rest of the season continues like this, The Rising of the Shield Hero will only get better from here.
