Thanks to  Shigeru Mizuki’s manga and 1989 anime series, Akuma Kun has had a strong fan base for many years. Fans were delighted to hear that a revival of the property would drop on Netflix in late 2023. The first season of the anime has already got people talking, and of course, the big question is will we get a Season 2? While it’s still early days for an announcement just yet, we can nonetheless reveal what we know thus far and speculate about what the future may hold, especially after that cliffhanger ending.

Rest assured we’ll keep this article updated with any new information as soon as we get it, so you’ll always find the latest details below.

Akuma Kun Season 2 Renewal Status

At the time of writing, there has been no official confirmation of a second series, so Akuma Kun has not been renewed for Season 2.

But don’t fret, eager viewers, as it is very early days for the new show, and there is plenty of time for the powers that be to collate the data they need and decide whether or not the show will get a second season.

The announcement from Netflix in 2021 that the show had been commissioned created a real buzz, as Akuma Kun has been beloved by many people for many years. This pre-existing fanbase should skew the numbers of the anime positively, and as you know, this is what it will all come down to. Netflix will be looking at the watch time and completion rate for the show, primarily, but other factors such as social media traction and critical reception will also play a part.

If we had to guess, we would tentatively say that a second season is very likely given the appeal of the IP and the extensive source material, and fans do seem to want it.

How did Akuma Kun Season 1 end?

The climactic season finale has a grisly ending and sees Gremory tearing out Ichiro’s heart to devour it. However, the look on Ichiro’s face seems to hint that there may be more going on than we know, and the open-ended finale leaves fans with their jaws dropped.

In the first season, Gremory is a demon who reluctantly helps Ichiro and Mephisto II out with their supernatural cases, to eventually get Ichiro’s heart. Since Gremory was instrumental in helping Ichiro imprison Strophaia, she earned the right to his ticker and claimed it at the end of the series. All part of Ichiro’s hyper-logical plans? Maybe, but we’ll have to wait for Season 2 to find out.

On the plus side, apart from the frustration of the show leaving plenty of unanswered questions, it does suggest that the showrunners are on board for a second season, and all we need now is the backing of Netflix.

Who created Akuma Kun?

Akuma-Kun is a manga series written and illustrated by Shigeru Mizuki that has previously been adapted into a live-action TV show, and an anime.

The manga and anime were so popular that they also inspired two film versions: Akuma-kun: The Movie in 1989 and Akuma-kun: Yokoso Akuma Land e!! released in 1990.

Critical reception to the projects was mixed, with some fans displeased with the change in some of the aspects of the original story. However the adaptations did strive to maintain consistency.

The most recent Netflix adaptation saw Junichi Sato returning to the property from the previous anime series. Animation studio Toei Animation was also on board with the revival and as such it is safe to say that the new series serves as a sequel to the original.

When could Season 2 of Akuma Kun be released?

The first season was announced in March 2021 with the show dropping in November 2023, so if we use that as a timeline, then it could be a long wait for Akuma Kun Season 2.

However, it might be the case that with a lot of the groundwork for the show already completed, the wait may not be quite as long. and some are speculating that it may only take a year for a second season to appear, giving us a release date of November 2024 for Season 2.

It seems that Q4 of 2024 is the earliest realistic expectation for a second season, unless, of course, it was always intended to extend beyond Season 1 and that information just hasn’t been made public. If this was the case the creative work for more episodes could have already been done, but even then, Netflix will want to find the right time for a release date.
