Summary

Episode 4 of The Buccaneers delivers in a big way. Easily the best episode of the season and some strong work from Kristine Froseth leads the charge.

We shift back to New York in the latest episode of the Apple TV+ series The Buccaneers. With the weight of the secret on Nan’s chest about her mother, she confronts Mrs. St. George about the truth. As this happens, a letter sent to Nan from Guy Thwarte lands in the wrong hands, and Nan’s issues continue to grow. Episode 4 is easily the best episode of Season 1 thus far and capitalizes on all the groundwork laid by previous chapters.

The series continues to juggle several different storylines, but as each episode progresses we see growth in the story and characters, making The Buccaneers a worthwhile weekly appointment to follow along with.

Guy sits down with Theo’s mother, who asks if he is in love because his shoulders are sitting the same way that his mothers used to be. Although he plays it off, we see him drinking and beginning to write a letter to Nan, revealing his true feelings for her.

Upon arriving, Mrs. St. George is excited to see her daughters, but when she says, “Because I am your mother” to Nan, her reaction to that comment leads to her mother realizing she might know the truth.

What happens when Nan confronts Mrs. St. George?

Nan explains that everything she ever told her was a lie. She wonders if she ruined her father and Mrs. St. George’s lives. Mrs. St. George attempts to talk to her about it, but Nan doesn’t want to hear her excuses. Before she storms away, Nan tells her that she must tell Theo the truth.

As Mrs. St. George hunts down Nan, she runs into Colonel, who attempts to dance with her, but she snaps at him. They go into a room where she tells the Colonel that Nan knows the truth and is threatening to tell Theo.

Guy wakes up the following morning realizing he wrote the letter and had it mailed off. He begins to freak out and tries to stop the letter from being sent.

Jinny and her new man Lord Seadown are the belles of the ball because of their recent marriage. Upon running into Lizzy, Lord Seadown pretends not to know who she is, which is shocking to her considering what he did to her.

What does Nan find out about her mother?

The Colonel finally finds his daughter and tries to cheer her up. Nan had been digging through old letters in his office. He shares a few details about her mother but ultimately tells her that a few short years after she was born, her mother had passed away.

With Lizzy staying back in New York, their mother informed Mabel, her sister, that she would have to stay in New York instead of returning to London. Mabel, not thrilled with this, pleaded with Lizzy to come back, but she refused. Later that evening, their mother walks in on Lizzy kissing one of the maids and leaves her in disbelief.

Who opens Guy’s letter to Nan?

The letter arrived at the house and was sitting on the table. Theo, Duke of Tintagel, sees the letter on the table and opens it in excitement. However, he reads it and discovers Guy is in love with Nan.

Conchita and Lord Richard are having the times of their lives being back in New York. She notices how much fun he has and tells Laura she must get him away from his family. Laura explains it’s not easy because he is the firstborn, and no man will choose freedom over power.

How does The Buccaneers Season 1 Episode 4 end?

We saw Theo run outside after reading the letter, and he returned to the party to find Nan. He pulls her away from everyone, places a big kiss on her, and asks if she wants him. She kisses him back and says yes.

Before they go inside, Nan says she needs to tell him something, but he tells her if what she is planning to tell him will spoil their happiness, she should keep it to herself. He looks at her and says, “Let’s get married soon.”
