Summary
While Sukuna’s presence seems to elevate almost any episode, the animation and storytelling of this week’s installment were top-tier, illustrating how much time, effort, and care went into producing Episode 17.
Despite eliminating one big threat in the previous episode of Crunchyroll’s Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, several powerful curses remain in Shibuya, ready to wreak havoc. Sukuna’s presence has already been felt by multiple sorcerers, already changing the course of the entire arc. While he continues in his path of destruction, Megumi is stuck taking on a still-breathing Haruta and an even larger cursed spirit in Episode 17, a top-tier episode with impressive production.
While Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen has been next level from the start, today’s episode was easily one of the best of both the season and series thus far.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 17 Recap
The episode opens with Megumi explaining how a sorcerer, using his Ten Shadows Technique, acquires shikigami. He stumbles through the street, bleeding out as Haruta follows closely behind, taunting him.
Megumi explains that subjugating a shikigami can take multiple tries, but sorcerers can summon the spirits as many times as they want for this purpose. So he summons Makora, a shikigami that no other sorcerer has managed to control before.
Makora knocks Megumi into the side of a building before turning his attention to a terrified Haruta. As Makora attacks him, Haruta’s miracle-based technique allows Sukuna to save him.
Saying he has plans for Megumi, Sukuna decides to take out Makora for him, saving his life while also canceling out the subjugation ritual he started.
Sukuna and Makora engage in a heated battle throughout Shibuya, utilizing everything from trains to airplanes to entire buildings in an attempt to defeat one another.
As Sukuna notices that Makora can not only see his technique but can also use cursed energy against him, he realizes that Makora has the innate ability to adapt to anything and everything.
What makes Sukuna’s domain special?
Sukuna’s domain, Malevolent Kitchen, is special because it does not use a barrier to carve out a separate space for itself. His domain is also equipped with a sacred pact that says by allowing his victims an escape route, the guaranteed hit effect of his domain increases to a 200-meter radius. His attacks, Fillet and Dissect, then seek out targets based on their cursed energy, or lack thereof, effectively eliminating every living thing in his domain’s radius.
How does Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 17 end?
Sukuna’s domain begins destroying anything and everything within its radius as he attempts to finish off Makura for good. He finally defeats Makora with a flaming arrow.
Sukuna delivers Megumi’s body to Shoko before returning Yuji’s body to him. The memories of everyone Sukuna killed flood through his mind at once, and Yuji falls to the ground in tears.
The episode ends with a half-burned Nanami navigating the station halls.
It almost doesn’t feel right to praise the stellar animation of this episode as word of MAPPA’s substandard working conditions runs rampant online, but this was truly something special.
The attention to detail was evident in the intense fight sequences, and the fight itself was so enthralling that it felt like the episode went by in the blink of an eye.
With great performances from Megumi and Yuji’s voice actors to round everything out, Episode 17 was a wildly entertaining watch that showed off just what makes Jujutsu Kaisen one of Crunchyroll‘s best series.
