Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain was supposed to have a theatrical release. Instead, the movie about three friends going on a quest to retrieve the titular mountain’s treasure premiered straight to Peacock. Like in all terrible comedies, the ending is about realizing the true meaning of friendship. And someone kills Gaten Matarazzo from Stranger Things.
In the movie, we watch the three main characters, Ben, Martin, and John, as they use a compass they found as children to find the once-stolen bust of Marie Antoinette, rumored to be worth more than $100 million. During their journey, the trio faces two bored rangers, a cult led by Bowen Yang, and a hairless bear.
Here, we break down the ending of Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain and try to make sense of what happened to the three hapless heroes.
Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain Ending Explained
Within weeks of escaping the cult with the treasure, Ben and Martin are living the lives they’ve always wanted for themselves. Ben is about to take over his father’s store, while Martin got hair extensions so he’ll look like Jesus. He also committed himself to donating several million dollars to his girlfriend’s church.
Life back at the cult is far from great for John. The cult leader threatened to kill his mom should he ever leave, and, even worse, he’s still not on speaking terms with Lisa.
Who is the treasure buyer?
John accidentally reveals to his cult that the treasure hasn’t been destroyed. So the group ties him up and heads to Trout Plus, where the sale is supposed to take place later that night. And who’s buying the Marie Antoinette bust? Gaten Matarazzo from Stranger Things.
When the three friends are finally reunited, they rush over to Trout Plus hoping to stop the cult. But first, we get one obligatory friends-forever emotional scene followed by the three protagonists using wingsuits to fly to the store.
Meanwhile, at the store, the cultists murder Gaten Matarazzo while he’s in the middle of a speech calling their leader a “poser.”
Who is Martin’s alter-ego?
As the fight is raging, Martin realizes he needs a little help to fight. So he drinks a beer and turns into his black-out-drunk alter-ego, Lawrence. This is the best part of the entire film.
Outside, the cult leader is surprised to learn that Lisa has turned most of his loyal members against him. He refuses to let go of the treasure, so Ben uses his irritating bird whistle to call the hawk.
How do Ben, Martin, and John get their treasure back?
The bird takes the bust from the cult leader and flies away with it, And for a brief moment, it seems like nobody is getting the treasure. But the hawk is one cheeky bird, so he does return with the bust and returns it to our three heroes.
How does Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain end?
In the last few scenes, we learn that Ben is ready to leave his father’s business behind and start his dream. Yes, it’s the hair salon for boys.
Amy tells Martin about her choice of erotic entertainment and encourages him to embrace the Lawrence side of himself more.
As for John and Lisa, the two of them realize they’ve had unfinished business in a tent.
Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain finally ends with clips of the three heroes enjoying a well-deserved holiday in London (and irritating any innocent passersby they come across).
