Candy Cane Lane follows the story of Chris Carver, played by Eddie Murphy, who is desperate to be the winner of the neighborhood house decoration competition that takes place over the festive season. In his attempt to win the contest, he visits a shop called Kringles, run by the enigmatic Pepper, who encourages him to purchase all manner of decorations for his home. However, there is more to Pepper than meets the eye, and pretty soon Chris finds himself at the center of a madcap adventure, that may have long-lasting repercussions for everyone involved. Can Chris and his family outwit the mischievous Pepper?
Who is Pepper in Candy Cane Lane?
Pepper works in Kringles, a shop that sells Christmas decorations, but unknown to all, she is a mischievous and somewhat malicious Elf who uses her position to trick people into entering a terrible deal.
Pepper tricks Chris by getting him to sign a contract that he believes is his receipt, leading to the chaos that ensues. Chris has purchased a “Twelve Days of Christmas” decoration, but it comes to life and Chris has to find the golden rings from the song before 8 pm or he will be turned into a glass figurine. This is a ploy that Pepper has used before, and the truth is revealed by her previous victims, now small glass figures, trapped in a small toy village.
As the plot unfolds we learn about Peppers’s past. It transpires that she was once a favorite Elf of Santa, but her high standards meant anyone who made even the smallest infraction would be placed on Santa’s “naughty” list. Santa realized Pepper was a little too power-hungry, and demoted her to the stables, however, Pepper would do what people always do in this situation — she would quit her job and make it a personal mission to punish anyone she thinks is naughty.
Pepper’s MO is to sell stuff to people on her naughty list, then trick them into signing a deal that could result in them being transformed into a glass figure if they can’t complete it in time. She throws cryptic clues, in the form of verse, at her targets, and constantly moves the goalposts, making the tasks impossible. Pepper is a narcissist who takes pleasure from being in control of others and making their lives miserable. We all know one.
