Summary

David Oyelowo delivers his best work in the series, while Lawmen: Bass Reeves continues to struggle with its uneven storytelling.

The weight of every bounty is starting to take a toll on Bass Reeves’s mind in the penultimate episode of Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 1. Every time he collects a new bounty, the guilt weighs heavy on him, but when he takes a moment a little too far in Episode 7, Bass finds himself in a position he may be unable to escape from.

The storytelling remains uneven even here at this late stage, but David Oyelowo, who has been a highlight throughout the entire season, delivers his very best work.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 1 Episode 7 Recap

The episode starts with a Marshal showing up at Bass Reeves‘s house to take him into custody. Shortly after, we hear Judge Isaac Parker begin to sentence him, before the series takes us back to six weeks earlier when Judge Parker and Bass sit at the dinner table with their wives.

After a little girl shows up at the Reeves household asking for Bass and Sally, Jennie realizes that something isn’t right. Finally, Sally comes clean about what she had done at the carnival to the little girl. Jennie snaps at Sally for what she did. That night, someone sets fire to a scarecrow, scaring the family.

Bass Reeves hunts down his latest bounty, and he and Billy Crow are up for the night. However, in the morning, they realize that Billy’s cook has freed the prisoner. The man questions Bass and what he is doing, and when he pushes too far, Bass shoots him. Billy reminds Bass they must clean it up because Judge Parker doesn’t take random killings lightly.

Why was Bass Reeves arrested?

Although it’s not revealed how the truth got out about what happened with Bass and Billy’s cook, Willy Leach, we see the Marshal show up at Bass’s door to arrest him. He is being charged with the murder of Willy Leach.

After the arrest, Judge Parker sits down with Bass to talk about where his head is at with the entire situation. Bass shares a story about his childhood and everything that he went through. He further explained that he understood the situation and was ready to pay for what he did. Before leaving, Bass tells Judge Parker that he isn’t going down alone and wants to know “how much time we are doing, sir.”
