Reacher is back on Prime Video with a second season of the gripping thriller series. Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is now a drifter, traveling across the vast expanse of the US, like a modern-day David Banner. In Season 1 of the show, he befriended two good cops and got involved with all manner of corruption, including criminals inside the police force and crooked politicians. In season 2 of the show, he is on a quest for vengeance when one of his old colleagues is murdered, but many have been quick to notice that those two good cops from Season 1, Oscar Finlay and Roscoe Conklin, are nowhere to be seen. If you’re wondering why Roscoe is not in Reacher Season 2, and whether she might make an appearance, you’re in the right place.

Why is Roscoe not in Reacher Season 2?

Willa Fitzgerald’s Roscoe is sadly not in Season 2 of Reacher. After the events of Season 1, Reacher has left Margrave, Roscoe’s home territory, making it difficult to keep Roscoe in the narrative. Season 1 was based on Killing Floor, the first Reacher novel by Lee Child, and introduced a trend in which Reacher would strike up a romantic relationship with the female lead and then leave her at the end of the story. Season 2 of the show is based on Bad Luck and Trouble, the eleventh Reacher book. Roscoe is long gone by this point and Reacher has had many romantic conquests since, including a new one for this story.

Even in in-universe character terms, despite the mutual attraction between Reacher and Roscoe, and fans hoping they would stay together, it seems that Reacher’s wanderlust and Roscoe’s dedication to her job and community would always be a wall between them.

Who played Roscoe in Reacher?

Roscoe was played by Willa Fitzgerald in the first season of the show. You might recognise the talented actress from other productions such as USA Network’s television drama series Dare Me and more recently the Netflix horror series The Fall of the House of Usher.

Willa is set to appear in the upcoming movie Joe Baby.

What book is Reacher Season 2 based on?

As mentioned above, Reacher Season 2 is based on Lee Child’s novel Bad Luck and Trouble. The book is the eleventh title in the series, so quite a lot of Reacher’s fictional journey is omitted. This must have been a difficult decision to be made by the production team, jumping ahead nine titles, but it may have been strategic, in an attempt to keep the series fresh and exciting.

It is also a story that strongly features the character of Frances Neagley, one of the few recurring characters in the franchise. She debuted in the book Without Fail, the sixth in the series, but the Prime Video show elected to introduce her in Season 1 and work her into the plot of Killing Floor. The 110th MP Special Investigators, a unit of which both Reacher and Neagley were a part, was also namechecked in Season 1 dialogue. This all implies that it was always the intention for Season 2 to be based on this particular novel.

Who writes the Jack Reacher books?

The Jack Reacher books are written by British author Jim Grant but under the pen name of Lee Child. There are twenty-six books and multiple short stories featuring the character, and as well as this streaming series, Tom Cruise has played the character in two theatrically released movies.

Notably, beginning with the twenty-fifth book in the series, The Sentinal, Lee Child began co-writing the books with his brother Andrew, with the intention of having Andrew eventually take over completely. This marked a severe downturn in the quality of the recent novels, with some suggesting that Andrew had been handling almost all of the writing responsibilities the entire time.
