Lawmen: Bass Reeves is the latest series in the Taylor Sheridan universe on Paramount+. The series tackles the story of lawman Bass Reeves who was one of the first Black deputy U.S. Marshals west of the Mississippi River. While Sheridan produces the show, it was created by Chad Feehan (Ray Donovan) and stars Emmy-nominated actor David Oyelowo. Lawmen: Bass Reeves has been far from perfect. That said, David Oyelowo’s turn helped you settle into the show and find that investment anyway. The journey might have been bumpy, but the action and Oyelowo’s performance make it worth the ride. But will Paramount be saddling up for another go-around in Season 2? Here’s everything we know thus far.

Has Lawmen: Bass Reeves been renewed for Season 2?

Official Renewal Status: TBC

Lawmen: Bass Reeves is yet to be renewed for a second season.

The answer right now is straightforward, as the show has NOT been renewed. However, in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, producer/star of the series, David Oyelowo, stated, “The idea, going forward, is to have other lawmen in history whose story should be told, who haven’t been told, to have the opportunity to tell those stories.”

On the flip side, in an interview with Collider, show creator Chad Feehan said, “I wanted to leave some meat on the bone in case there was an appetite for more Bass Reeves. So that opens the door, but his follow-up was more in line with what Oyelowo said: “Should there be an appetite for a different lawman, I’m excited by that opportunity as well.”

I’m going to predict that Lawmen: Bass Reeves will be renewed for a second season. The character is too rich not to explore his story further, and the series’ success will provide even more reason. I would also expect to see many stories like this in the Sheridan universe following other Lawmen of the past.

How has Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 1 performed?

You couldn’t ask for a better audience score than the 95% that Lawmen: Bass Reeves boasts on Rotten Tomatoes. While critics aren’t as high (81%), the series still landed the “Certified Fresh” marker with the aggregate.

During the 2024 Golden Globes nomination show, it was announced that David Oyelowo was nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television. It’s another notch in the belt for the series.

What is Lawmen: Bass Reeves about?

The synopsis for Lawmen: Bass Reeves: We follow the story of a legendary lawman, Bass Reeves, who escaped slavery to become the first Black deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River. As a sheriff, he captured over 3,000 criminals without ever being wounded.

Throughout Season 1, we explored Bass Reeves’s rise and how his job took a toll on him and his family. With being the only Black U.S. Marshal, his friends, family, and the enslaved questioned what side he was truly on. Because of this, we saw him wrestle with the idea of providing for his family and doing what is right.
