Summary
Episode 8 is compelling, and the story is infuriating enough to make your blood boil. The conclusion is nowhere near satisfying. There’s no real justice. And that’s what makes this series so good, as it mimics the real-life story with frightening accuracy.
Where the first few episodes of Dr. Death Season 2 took place in separate timelines (and countries), showing two sides of the same coin of Paolo’s deceit, everything comes together for the ending in Episode 8. Thanks to the work of the three whistleblowers, Benita can finally expose her ex to the world. And due to her efforts, Nate, Ana, and Anders get to see a small semblance of vindication.
In the cliffhanger for Episode 7, Nate, Ana, and Anders are arrested and held overnight at the police station. The following morning, Anders’s wife (who happens to be an attorney) gets the three whistleblowers released. However, the situation is far from resolved.
Dr. Death Season 2 Episode 8 Recap
Disregarding her attorney’s advice, Ana heads to Russia to find Yulia, remove the plastic trachea, and, hopefully, save her life. Sadly, when Ana arrives, she learns from Yulia’s mother about the young woman’s passing. According to the mother, the windpipe started rotting inside her. Yulia died a slow, agonizing death.
Back in New York, Benita is excited about the leaked report put together by Nate, Ana, and Anders, and she’s on her way to meet with her colleague and get the findings published. She now has the proof she needed to expose what Paolo had been doing to his patients.
Why is the Karolinska Institute trying to silence the whistleblowers?
Blowing the whistle on Paolo’s lethally miraculous procedure would make Karolinska as an institution look bad. So naturally, the board of directors will go to any lengths to silence the whistleblowers and protect the institute’s reputation.
In retaliation, Nate, Ana, and Anders are accused of breaching patient confidentiality by writing their detailed paper. All three receive a summons to defend their report before the board of directors.
At the tribunal, Nate, Anders, and Ana are shocked to realize the board members didn’t even read their report. Instead, they’re more interested in questioning the three’s credibility. Nate gives a passionate speech naming all the patients Paolo “experimented” on.
Unfortunately, the board had made up their mind before the meeting even started. The three whistleblowers are advised to retract their report. If they refuse, Karolinska might even go as far as to press charges against them.
Naturally, Nate, Ana, and Anders drown their sorrows together for a few hours.
Where is Paolo?
As for Paolo, he’s in Russia continuing his “research.” As he’s about to implant his miracle trachea into another vict– sorry, patient, we see he even stopped pretending there’s any need for scientific preparation of his plastic windpipe. Even Yulia’s death didn’t dissuade him from continuing his “work.”
He gives an interview to a German documentary filmmaker and seems to be unraveling. The man compares himself to God, then goes outside and starts angrily kicking his motorcycle.
That night, Paolo hears from the documentary’s producer, who tells him they’re canceling the shoot, and then opens his emails to read something “rather concerning.”
RELATED: The true story behind Dr. Death
In Stockholm, our three whistleblowers are very hungover. But when they arrive at the board meeting, they’re pleased to hear the recent press coverage (courtesy of Benita) forced Karolinska’s hand into bringing in a third-party reviewer to look at their report.
Benita is reading through the comments on the published piece. And they’re exactly the type of comments you’d expect on the Internet. She did the right thing by exposing Paolo, but sadly, that made her virtually unemployable, as her relationship with him did break several journalistic rules. She does, however, find more opportunities when women in similar situations to her start reaching out.
How does Dr. Death Season 2 end?
Several months later, Benita, Nate, Ana, and Anders attend a press conference organized by the Swedish police where they’re about to disclose the results of the official inquiry surrounding Paolo. While the authorities agreed he committed scientific misconduct, they declined to press criminal charges.
The series ends with all the main players moving on with their lives. In a chilling final scene, we watch Paolo wash his hands of blood after operating on his eighth patient.
In the epilogue text, we find out that Paolo continued to operate around the world, even after losing his privileges at Karolinska. It took three whole years before the Swedish authorities decided to hold him criminally accountable for the deaths of Yesim Cetir, Christopher Lyles, and Andemariam Beyene. At trial, he was only found guilty of the “felony of causing the bodily harm of Yesmin Cetir.”
