Summary

Although the end seems fitting and complete, the finale feels somewhat anti-climatic compared to the build-up in the last few episodes.

After months of unreal battles, unexpected plot twists, and even a few devastating deaths, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 is coming to a close with Episode 23. Although Mahito’s been defeated, Yuji still can’t focus on unsealing Gojo, with Geto now standing in his way. Even with the help of additional sorcerers and allies, the battle to save Gojo isn’t going to be any easier unless Yuji can surpass his limits. After such a wild ride, especially in the last few episodes, the ending feels surprisingly calm, almost like an extended epilogue meant to lay the foundation for a third season.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 23 Recap

The episode opens with Yuki confronting Geto about his plans while trying to buy time for Larue to react. Suddenly, Geto uses Idle Transfiguration, the innate technique he seems to have acquired from absorbing Mahito earlier.

Geto reveals he’s remotely activated Mahito’s technique on two types of non-sorcerers that he chose ahead of time: those who he swallowed cursed objects like Yuji and those who already had cursed techniques but whose brains were structured similarly to those who didn’t, like Junpei. His plan is to let them attack each other.

The sorcerers prepare to fight as Geto releases numerous curses. Geto then attempts to leave while holding the Prison Realm, but then the scene quickly cuts to the reactions of civilians all around Japan watching the news and trying to decide if what they are hearing is real. Many people in the know seem to fear a potential outbreak of cursed spirits.

It is decided that the government will announce the existence of cursed spirits to the public, but saying that they only arise in Tokyo. While watching the news, civilians see coverage of workers being attacked by cursed spirits before being attacked in their own homes.

In a convenience store, a young girl attempting to scavenge a bento is lured away by a cursed spirit and almost eaten, only to be saved by Yuta Okkotsu and Rika suddenly.

How does Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 end?

When the higher-ups at Jujutsu Headquarters confront Yuta, he says he does not care that Yuji is one of Gojo’s students and promises to kill him.

In the notes regarding the incident from Jujutsu society, Geto is declared alive and resentenced to death. Gojo is deemed an accomplice to the incident and expelled from Jujutsu society. Yaga is sentenced to death. The suspension of Yuji’s death sentence is immediately revoked. Yuta is named Yuji’s executioner.

The first half of the episode felt almost dull, but I will say while it wasn’t exciting, the information received was quite necessary.

Seeing the aftermath of the Shibuya Incident during the second half and the return of Yuta were definitely the highlights of the episode, and I’m curious to see how they will affect the next season.
