Summary
“Protect The Family” is the perfect end to an incredible season of The Brothers Sun. It delivers an emotional farewell but also sets up a potential for what’s to come.
The ending of The Brothers Sun hinges on a reversal of the premise that introduced Season 1. Whereas initially Charles was sent to L.A. to protect his mother Eileen and younger brother Bruce, in Episode 8, “Protect the Family”, Big Sun orders him to kill Bruce for betraying the family. This comes after a massive shootout leading to the busts of Triad gang members.
The finale is a perfect end to the Netflix series, providing an emotional payoff to the first eight episodes but also setting up more to come in the future.
Who is willing to make a deal with the cops?
As a result of the raid, we see that Frank Ma is behind bars. He reached out, stating he only wanted to deal with Alexis because she is Chinese. Frank tells Grace he will give her anything she wants in return for his freedom. He had one condition: Big Sun is behind bars before he talks because he is afraid of what might happen otherwise.
Eileen is pissed at Bruce because he stuck his nose in the meeting. He tells his mom he wanted to protect his family and calls her out for not being a boss, pleading with her to let things return to normal. She snaps saying she gave it all up for him. Charles arrives, takes his frustration out on Bruce, and pulls a gun on him. However, he is unable to pull the trigger.
Amid the talks of trying to figure out their next move, Charles finally realizes that Alexis is the one who tracked him via his cell phone.
Why was Charles arrested?
Big Sun reveals he had Charles followed and is sending Xing to complete the job. She leaves, but Charles won’t allow it to just happen, so he kills two of his bodyguards and chases her down. He shoots out the back windows, but the cops are close by, and he is arrested for firing the gun in a busy intersection.
Alexis walks in to interrogate Charles about what happened. He pleads with her to let him go to protect his mother and father, but she wants his father in exchange. Charles refuses, so she leaves the room, telling him to think about what she wants.
Who dies in “Protect the Family?”
Xing arrives at the hotel to kill Bruce and tells Eileen to allow her to do it and not stand in her way, or else she will have to kill her, too. As the protective mom, Eileen refuses to stand by, and the two start to fight. She takes advantage of Xing and ends up killing her with a phone cord.
Bruce convinces Alexis to turn off the cameras while he goes to talk to Charles. He asks Charles to tell him where his dad is, but not for the cops, but because he is planning to kill their father.
What does Big Sun offer to Bruce?
Bruce pulls a gun on Big Sun, leading to Big Sun offering Bruce Charles’s spot in the family because he has the “balls” to pull a gun on him. Big Sun further tries to talk him into it until Bruce shoots him in the stomach. Bruce gives him a choice of either dying there or calling the ambulance to save him.
How does The Brothers Sun Season 1 end?
After calling an ambulance, Big Sun arrived at the hospital, allowing Alexis and her team to arrest him until he was better. Eileen gets the last laugh with Big Sun as she arrives at his hospital and notes on his hospital papers that he needs insulin. She gives him his first dose and will get them moving forward, slowly killing him.
At home, Eileen announces to Bruce she is heading back to Taiwan to run the business. We saw she bought Charles a bakery, but he couldn’t let his mom return home alone, knowing how dangerous her plan was. So, as Eileen is about to board a jet back home, Charles breaks the news to Bruce that he is heading back with her.
