Criminal Record is a tense crime thriller from Apple TV+ set and filmed in the UK. Gritty and dark, the series was written by Paul Rutman and directed by Jim Loach and Shaun James Grant and is unmistakably a British-produced cop thriller full of recognizable locations from the nation’s capital.
Where was Criminal Record filmed?
London, UK
Filming your cop show in London in the UK is like filming your cop show in New York in the US. The location is so well known that it is almost a character in itself for viewers, and even more so for people who live in said locale. Of course, the production features some of the more iconic and recognizable London landmarks. There are the usual establishing shots of the city’s skyline, and everything is tinted in midnight blue to make sure we know this is a dark city, filled with secrets.
However, the production also uses some well-known local areas to record in.
Hackney, London
The action starts in Hackney, which is a district you can find in the East End of London. The scene where the phone call is made in Episode 1 occurs in a particularly grim-looking area of the borough, which is a diverse and culturally exciting location with a rich history and plenty to see and do. One area spotted in the show is Dalston.
Dalston, London
Dalston is located in Hackney and is about four miles northeast of Charing Cross. The area was once a hamlet situated adjacent to Dalston Lane, and as the area was urbanized, it eventually became known as Dalston. Another part of Hackney that filming took place in, was Kingsland, also part of Hackney.
Shoreditch High Street, London
Eagle-eyed location spotters will notice this particular high street in London, part of the A10 road, that connects Norton Folgate to Kingsland Road. St Leonard’s Church can be seen here, at the crossroads where it joins with Hackney Road. As more episodes drop, we would love to hear what other locations you might spot in this sure-to-be-a-hit UK cop drama.
Who produced Criminal Record?
Tod Productions and STV Studios are named as the production companies on the series, and the named executive producers are Elaine Collins, creator Paul Rutman, and the two leads in the series, Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo, are also checked in the credits. It is worth noting that Elaine Collins is the real-life wife of Peter Capaldi, and this is his first time playing a policeman, although he is familiar with police boxes.
Who wrote Criminal Record?
The series was written by Paul Rutman, a seasoned TV producer who has been involved with projects such as The Secret, The Virgin Queen, Lark Rise to Candleford, Indian Summers, and Next of Kin. He is no stranger to writing TV detectives, with stints on Vera, Marple, Lewis, and New Tricks.
