Summary

There is just enough intrigue to keep this crime series ticking over, although the mysteries surrounding Daniel Hegarty and The Sixty-Twos’ coverup are starting to feel rather lowkey and redundant at this point, having been dragged on for far too long.

Criminal Record Season 1 continues to push its main two subplots in Episode 4. “Protected” focuses on the investigation into Isaac Whitlow’s shooter, whilst June seeks out the very first anonymous caller, who knows the true identity of the real killer in the Adelaide Burrowes case. Clearly, Daniel and his boys want to cover up this truth, but June is most definitely on to them now and will stop at nothing to unravel this police corruption once and for all.

Episode 4 begins with a playback of June’s appearance at the Isaac Whitlow press conference. June’s family is surprised to see the detective on TV for the first time. This leads to an argument between June and her mother Maureen. There is some bad blood in the family. June’s father was terrorized by the police in his past, with the series exploring themes of racism in the police force once again.

Who confesses to the shooting of Isaac Whitlow?

Meanwhile, Daniel interrogates Jason Reeve about the shooting at Rowntree Park. Jason surprises the detective by instantly confessing to the shooting. He says that it was an accident though, he was just trying to scare a rival gang. The bullet is removed from Isaac’s brain and matches with Jason’s firearm. Daniel has the criminal, but he is confused by the effortless confession.

He questions June about the confession in front of all the other officers. Daniel seems to be mulling over the problem out loud, but he might also be subtly taunting June about Errol’s previous confession. June buys Jason’s confession but doesn’t believe Errol’s one bit. Daniel thinks that Jason’s confession is a coverup, that Jason was threatened and bribed into it. The real shooter is still out there.

Daniel questions Jason again after the police helpline receives fresh evidence from an eyewitness. The caller saw a white man shooting the child and a black man (Jason) driving the shooter away from the crime scene. Jason then reveals that the actual shooter is Turkish, but he refuses to give them a name.

June receives vital evidence. A woman claims to know the anonymous caller that has been identified in flyers in the local area. The woman thinks the anonymous caller is Carla, a cleaner in the local area. June is then shown a much better photograph of Carla. Finally, some progress in the case.

Who is Patrick dating?

Elsewhere, Patrick visits his mother’s grave and runs into Doris, Errol’s mum. Doris updates Patrick on the new case. They think that they have information that could help lead to Errol’s release from prison. This news reopens old wounds for Patrick, so he visits Daniel. The detective talks him through Errol’s case again. Daniel has been looking out for Patrick all this time, they seem to have a bond. Patrick believes everything Daniel tells him. It is later revealed that Patrick has been dating Daniel’s daughter Lisa in secret though.

Whilst investigating the potential shooter, June has a breakthrough in the Errol case. She looks up the man who could clarify Errol’s alibi, the barber, Mustafa Demir. June then discovers that his name was written down wrong and is, in fact, Mostapha.

June meets up with Mostapha to discuss the alibi. Mostapha explains how he was shown many photographs of black men, who looked similar to Errol. The police tricked him and he picked the wrong face. Mostapha regrets his actions, but at the time he was too scared to right this wrong.

After this breakthrough, June calls Sonya. The detective now believes that Errol is without a doubt an innocent man. As she heads back to her car, she notices that it is on fire. She has been targeted by gang members. June is given round-the-clock protection in return. Daniel informs her that due to these threats, she must be removed from the investigation.

Adding insult to injury, Professional Standards are back. An allegation of workplace bullying has been reported against June. The detective feels attacked, once again. And she blames everything on Daniel, once again. Roy explains that Daniel is a good guy, he’s just solved the Rowntree Park after all.

Who shot Isaac Whitlow?

It is revealed that Amit Ceker has been arrested for the shooting of Isaac Whitlow. Daniel coerced Jason into giving them a name. They now have physical evidence and a sworn testimony. Daniel has caught the true shooter.

Chloe tells June that she was the person who made the complaint against her. She explains how Roy was questioning her about the pathology report. Chloe originally handed June the report in secret. She chose to save herself and gave up June instead. The two argue and Chloe admits that June is hated by her colleagues because of the press conference, becoming complicit in the force’s attempts to mask their racism.

How does Criminal Record Season 1 Episode 4 end?

As the episode draws to an end, June is told that a police officer is aware of Carla and has started looking for her. June and Sonya ponder who blabbed. They wonder if Doris or her friends let it slip. June decides to focus on Doris’ friend Latisha, questioning her next. Latisha reveals that she has been feeding Tony Gilfoyle information about Doris for 8 years now, in secret. June orders Latisha to stop doing this right away.

June confronts Daniel about the Latisha situation. The two rivals are now clear, unequivocal enemies. Everything is finally out in the open. June tells Sonya about these crazy updates. Then Carla phones, begging them to stop the investigation, adding that her boyfriend is a protected man.
