Do Dexter and Emma get together in One Day?
In Episode 1 of One Day, the couple meet but decide that they are not going to sleep with each other. Instead, they fall asleep, and the next day they have a day in beautiful Edinburgh, Scotland. Over the day, they decide that their encounter will be a one-time thing and make their way back to Dexter’s flat, however, the pair are disturbed when his mum and dad arrive, and Emma eventually leaves. Dex manages to catch up with Emma, and they manage to exchange numbers so they can stay in touch, which of course, they do. Eventually, after spending many St Swithin’s days with each other, the couple does finally get together, but the story does not end there.
Dexter and Emma’s Relationship Explained
Throughout the series, there are many chances for the couple to get together, but it seems that the time was just never right for them, and they continue to somehow dance around their obvious attraction. Dexter ends up marrying Sylvie, and they have a daughter together, but Sylvie grows weary of Dexter, and feels he cannot keep her in the fashion she is accustomed to, leading to problems between the two.
In Episode 12, Dexter is hitting rock bottom. He is getting divorced from Sylvie, who has left him for Callum, and he finds himself jobless, and at his wits end. This is when he makes his way to Paris, and back to Emma. However, Emma has met someone else, but she relents and decides to make a proper go of it with Dexter, leaving her boyfriend and committing to him. Episode 13 of the show covers three years in the lives of the pair, and it is at the end of this episode that, heartbreakingly, Emma is hit by a car and dies.

What happens in the ending of the One Day book?
The book and the series maintain the prominent beats of the story, including the tragic ending. On the anniversary of the day they met after graduation and the day they got together, Emma and Dexter have an appointment to see a house. However, tragedy is not far away, and as Emma is on her bike to view the house, she is involved in an accident and dies.
Dexter struggles to keep his life together after her death and begins drinking heavily and getting involved in fights in bars, provoking others to hit him. Eventually, he is helped by his ex-wife Sylvie, his father, and his young daughter, and three years after Emma’s death, he takes her to Edinburgh to make the same climb that he did with Emma all those years ago. The book finishes with a flashback to the day the couple met, and how they promised to stay in touch.
What is St Swithin’s Day?
St Swithin’s Day is a Church festival in the UK, that commemorates St Swithin on July 15th each year. The legend has it, that if it rains on St Swithin’s day, it will continue for forty days. There is no evidence that this has ever happened.
St Swithin was The Bishop of Winchester from the year 852 to 862. It is said that when he died, he requested a simple grave outside, so he would be subject to the weather, however, his remains were eventually placed indoors, and this triggered stormy weather, which is how legends start.
