The Heartbreak Agency is a predictable rom-com with a predictable ending. Karl, a misogynistic scorned man, and his therapist Marie begin an awkward love affair, as we watch our selfish journalist change from a hateful player to a hopeless romantic. Will he change his ways and realize his insensitive views are outdated? Will he and Marie end up together? Of course!
In the last twenty minutes of The Heartbreak Agency, Karl sees a man at Marie’s apartment (her ex) and leaves/runs away. Now the shift is onto Marie and her choosing between her ex and a man who wrote a scathing article about her and then ghosted her after sleeping with her and meeting her child.
Annoyingly a no-brainer for me, but films don’t work the way we want them to. Marie has a nice moment where she finally heals from her ex, and Karl re-writes his article into one more heartfelt and full of emotion.
How does The Heartbreak Agency end?
Dressed as David Bowie, Karl cycles the streets to get back to Marie and pour his heart out to her, before getting hit in the face with a baseball bat from a crazy client at the agency. Once he’s conscious he and Marie kiss in the back of an ambulance.
The final shots are of Marie and Karl watching her daughter skate, with a close-up of them holding hands, and a police siren leads us into the credits.
A sweet but predictable ending — a least our two love-haters have found love in each other.
Why does Karl write the article?
Ego. Karl’s “girlfriend” dumps him after speaking with her therapist (Marie). Karl then stages an interview with Marie to besmirch her, her work, and the concept of heartbreak through an article.
This is a revenge tactic; Karl doesn’t care about his relationship, he’s annoyed at the fact a woman has dared to dump him.
Karl is a journalist, so he has the skills and network to write an article that could have an impact. However, his article backfires, and he’s fired from his job.
Does Karl have a change of heart?
Yes, Karl does have a change of heart. Weirdly, as soon as he realizes he is in love with his therapist Marie, he’s now a caring family man, making friends with her daughter. He teaches Marie’s daughter some skateboarding moves and goes to dinner with Marie’s friends and the two now are almost in a relationship.
Then he ghosts her when he thinks her ex is coming back into her life, reverting to his previously awful self. Then he has his revelations about love and rewrites his article showing what a sorry and changed man he is.
He now understands love, the good and the bad, admits he’s wrong, and then goes to pour his heart out to the new love of his life.
Whilst it’s a quick transformation with little depth and development, he does have a change of heart.
Do Karl and Maria end up together?
As awkward as this relationship feels, ignoring the rules around therapists and their clients, the two find love and hope in one another.
Marie has doubts when her husband comes back into the picture, but quickly lets them go, whilst Karl has his doubts as he thinks Marie will get back with her ex and he doesn’t want to get hurt.
In the end, they both choose one another and make one little happy family.
