Apple TV+’s latest crime drama series Criminal Record, has debuted with a fascinating first season, and while its renewal for Season 2 hasn’t yet been officially confirmed it seems inevitable. The 8-part series explores rival detectives and police corruption in the heart of a gritty, modern London, and has sparked an interest with both the critical community and Apple subscribers around the world.
Criminal Record Season 2 Renewal Status
At the time of writing (February 15, 2024), Criminal Record has not been officially renewed for Season 2. With an ever-growing library of content, the streaming platform will be deliberating on all of the available data in the meantime, weighing up the potential for a follow-up season.
The series comes from the British writer and producer Paul Rutman (Vera and Indian Summers) and features stunning performances from its two lead stars and executive producers, Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who) and Cush Jumbo (The Good Wife). It’s had a great response from critics and its viewers so far, which would indicate that the show stands a good chance of being renewed. But for the time being its renewal status is still to be confirmed and is pending over at Apple HQ.
The show got off to an encouraging start, garnering many positive reviews from the critics. The series currently holds a rating of 7.6 out of 10 on IMDb, whilst on Rotten Tomatoes, the show has a fresh score of 90% from over 30 reviews and an audience score of 87%. These stats are very promising for the crime thriller.
Critics have praised the show’s impressive unraveling mysteries and the solid lead performances from Capaldi and Jumbo. The show is elevated further by an enticing central mystery, which explores themes of injustice and racism in the modern Metropolitan Police Service.
Over on Apple TV+ itself, the show made an early appearance in the top 10 original TV charts. It would appear the series is liked by both the critics and the general public, which is a winning combination indeed.
All the data is pointing towards an almost certain renewal for Criminal Record. At this point, it seems highly likely that fans will be treated to a second helping of the intense crime thriller original series soon. There are plenty of directions the second season can take as well. The show could focus on the continued rivalry between its two lead detectives, DCI Daniel Hegarty and DS June Lenker. Or the writers could twist the format and have these two rivals working together on a new case instead.
If the series continues to remain popular with subscribers and critics, then I see no reason for Apple TV+ to cancel the series. I wouldn’t be surprised if the show is renewed in the coming weeks. As always, we will keep you posted on any updates in the pending renewal of Criminal Record.
