Seventh Son is a thrilling 2014 fantasy adventure starring Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, and Ben Barnes. The film follows the story of John Gregory, a seventh son of a seventh son, and protector of his country. He is looking for an apprentice, and finds a young farmer called Thomas Ward that he trains to take on the mantle of protector, but can he make the grade? This movie has its fans, and if you are one of them, here are 10 movies like Seventh Son that you might also enjoy.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

Goofy dark lord Tim Burton and enigmatic Bond victim Eva Green team up for this quirky gothic adventure that did seem pitched to become a bit of a franchise. It didn’t pan out, and this gothic version of the X-Men fell at the first hurdle. However, it does have its fans and anything from Burton is worth a watch.

The Seeker: The Dark is Rising (2007)

Grumpy ex-Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston and Lovejoy star Ian McShane were involved in this tale of Will Stanton, a young lad who discovers he is the last of a gang of warriors tasked with saving the world from The Dark. Fantasy fans should check this out as it is based on a series of well-loved books that you may have missed.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (2010)

Imbalanced cinematic genius Nicholas Cage plays Balthazar Blake, a sorcerer looking for help to stop the evil shenanigans of his arch-enemy Maxim Horvath. He recruits the aid of an inexperienced protégé, fast-tracking him up to speed, in the hope they can stop the evil that is growing.

Zhongkui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal (2015)

Here’s an entry that you may not have heard of, that follows the tale of the legendary Chinese anti-hero Zhong Kui, a young man granted mysterious powers forced into a war among the realms of Heaven, Earth, and Hell attempting to save his countrymen and the woman he loves.

Excalibur (1981)

A classic tale of Arthurian legend, directed by John Boorman with an ensemble all-star British cast that reads like a who’s-who, including Helen Mirren, Gabriel Byrne, Nigel Terry, Liam Neeson, Clive Smith, and Patrick Stewart.

Jack The Giant Slayer (2013)

There’s a strange community on YouTube that will swear blind that giants once walked the Earth, and the proof is being covered up. This film pretty much proves that the premise is older than we think, and provides us with a modern take on an old classic. It tells the story of an ancient war between humans and a race of giants that becomes renewed when young farmer Jack, fighting for a kingdom and a princess he loves, opens a gateway between two worlds.

The Covenant (2013)

This fantasy adventure manages to follow some of the usual beats — four young friends with supernatural powers have to defend themselves against a warlock with a revenge plot as well as exploring their relationships with each other. Probably for die-hard fans of the genre only.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)

Another take on the Arthurian legend finds Arthur’s father murdered and his uncle seizing the crown, leaving Arthur robbed of his legacy and forced to fight his way back. Directed, surprisingly, by Guy Ritchie, this modern take didn’t strike a chord and is a bit of an enjoyable oddity.

Eragon (2006)

A movie especially like Seventh Son, here’s another farm boy who finds he has to leave his lowly profession to fight for the greater good, This time the MacGuffin is a dragon’s egg that sets him on a quest to defeat an evil king. Oddly, this film was the last major movie to be released on VHS in the US before the format went extinct. Every day is a school day.

Solomon Kane (2009)

Based on the character created by Conan writer Robert E Howard, this story follows Solomon Kane renouncing violence, but realizing his final fate is a trip to Hell and discovering that he may have to fight again to save a young girl kidnapped by evil forces. This is quite underrated and worth a re-evaluation if you are a fan of the genre.
