- After the violent incident at the mines, Herbert is reassigned to Elena’s personal humidity monitor. She’s a hypochondriac and her current obsession is mold.
- Palace Manager Agnes advises Herbert to keep his head down and do whatever Elena wants.
- Elena is married to the softspoken Frenchman Nicholas, whose main role is to open poetry clubs, smile, and look pretty by her side.
- The chancellor has no children of her own but acts like a “co-parent” to Agnes’s son, Oskar.
- Herbert starts working for Elena on the same day she’s celebrating Victory Day when she first rose to power.
- Elena’s councilors are desperate to get her to close on a deal with an American corporation for the country’s cobalt mines, but she’s having second thoughts about the deal.
- After embarrassing Elena in front of the Americans, Herbert is briefly demoted. Eventually, he saves her life after a disgruntled cobalt miner makes his way into the Palace.
- Feeling vulnerable after the attack, Elena takes Herbet’s advice, starts using anti-American rhetoric, and pulls away from her counselor’s cobalt deal.
