The Tearsmith Plot Summary and First Thoughts
The movie’s official, albeit vague, summary on IMDb reads thusly:
Sometimes our greatest fear is accepting that someone can honestly love us for who we are. Nica and Rigel are ready to find it out together.
The story follows Nica, who has grown up in the grimmest of orphanages and is policed by a nasty matron that makes things miserable for all involved. To escape from her tortured reality, Nica would create her own imaginative stories, populated by the Tearsmith, a supernatural force that creates the anxieties and fears that live in our hearts.
Things start to look up when Nica is adopted, however, she finds that the family she lives with has also adopted another orphan, Rigel, an enigmatic and troubled soul, whom she is conflicted about and will ultimately play an important part in her future.
The trailer does not give too much away and seems to focus on the two leads, with plenty of dimly lit scenes hinting at the dark romance of the premise. The Director Behind The Tearsmith
The Tearsmith was directed by Milan-born Alessandro Genovesi who has had a long film career as an actor, writer, and director. You might recognize him from films such as The Wonders, Soap Opera, and What A Beautiful Surprise, but he also directed When Mom Is Away and 7 Women and a Murder.

Who wrote the original novel?
The original novel The Tearsmith is credited to Erin Doom and would be an instant hit, reaching the top spot in book charts in Italy before finding a worldwide readership. The name is a pseudonym for the author, who has also gone on to write a further two novels, The Way the Snow Falls and Stigma. The author has a background in law and uses her knowledge when writing about court cases in her novels.
The Tearsmith would attract a lot of attention on social media platforms, and in particular TikTok, where it would become viral, sparking huge interest in the property. Whether or not this led to the Netflix film being made is an assumption, but we are sure it helped.

Was Erin Doom involved in the Netflix film?
While the production does appear to have stayed close to the source material, Erin Doom was not officially involved in Netflix’s adaptation of The Tearsmith.
In an interview with The Nerd Daily, Erin would say: “I saw the script, I was on the set once, but wasn’t involved in other choices.” This suggests she did not have a great input, however, she does seem to have OK’d the script and must have been happy with what she saw on set.
