Filmed in Australia, Ricky Stanicky is a throwback to a certain kind of R-rated comedy that we don’t see as much of these days. With an interesting premise, the Prime Video movie has a production history stretching way back to 2010, and having passed through multiple directors and stars, it finally landed on Peter Farrelly in the director’s seat and Zac Efron, John Cena, and Andrew Santino topping the bill.

Ricky Stanicky Filming Locations

Metropolitan Melbourne, Australia

Most of the film was shot in the metropolitan area of Melbourne, located in the Australian state of Victoria. There are some interesting posts on the Instagram page for VicScreen that show the cast and crew in various locales. VicScreen is Victoria’s creative and economic screen development agency and shares lots of pictures from the movie.

Melbourne was used to double for the Rhode Island location where the movie is set, and the area was perfect to recreate the vibe for that setting. Many locations were used and if you know the area, you will no doubt be able to spot many of them in the finished product.

Crown Melbourne Whiteman Street

One of the easiest scenes to spot is in the casino where the friends meet, which is a real venue located in the Crown Melbourne on 8 Whiteman Street on the Southern bank of the Yarra River.

Monash Children’s Hospital

Some pivotal scenes of the movie were recorded at the Monash Children’s Hospital. The children in the real hospital became extras on the day and got to meet the stars of the shoot, including Zac Efron and John Cena. An Instagram post on the @veryspecialkids page states:

“Filmed at Monash Children’s Hospital, four Very Special Kids families met their idols, during the recording of upcoming film, Ricky Stanicky. The day was almost as exciting for some of the hospice team! We are very grateful to director Peter Farrelly and producer Paul Currie for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Ricky Stanicky Production Timeline

Ricky Stanicky has been in production for over a decade, and has taken many turns to get to its eventual release date on Prime Video. It has also been attached to many different stars and filmmakers, so buckle up for this quick timeline:

  • Ricky Stanicky has been an ongoing project since as far back as 2010. It was reported that James Franco was intended for the lead role in 2010, and Summit Entertainment was on board to finance.
  • With no movement by 2012, other options were considered, including having Joaquin Phoenix in the cast.
  • By 2013, Jim Carrey was also interested, but the production would stall.
  • It would be September 2022 before the ball would get rolling again.
  • Early 2023 cemented the casting. The screenplay would be based on the original spec script and principal photography would start.
  • In February 2023, Amazon revealed they had the rights to the movie, and filming began, running into March 2023.
  • A year later, Ricky Stanicky debuted on Prime Video on March 7, 2024.

Who produced and directed Ricky Stanicky?

Peter Farrelly would be named as the film’s director. He comes with a great comedy pedigree after movies such as Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary, and the needlessly controversial Green Book.

The production was handled by Footloose Production, Michael De Luca Productions, Rocket Science, and Smart Entertainment with Paul Currie, John Jacobs, Thorsten Schumacher, and Michael de Luca as the named producers.
