Erin & Aaron has been canceled and will not return for Season 2 at Netflix or Nickelodeon. The musical family show, which debuted in 2023, was a part of Netflix‘s multiyear distribution deal with Nickelodeon but was not popular enough to secure a renewal.

In the show, Erin and Aaron have very different personalities, but they share a love of music and song, and it is that shared passion that leads to them finding common ground and starting to believe in each other. Despite the cancellation, the songs from the first season will continue to be available on Spotify.

On February 5, 2024, Jensen Gering announced the cancellation in a lengthy statement on his Instagram. We have reproduced part of the statement below:

Our show ‘Erin & Aaron’ has come to an end.

I want to thank all the fans who loved, watched and supported our show. The experience I had being a part of E&A was truly one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life. Getting to do comedy, sing and play music in one show was the best. I learned so much, worked so hard and had the time of my life. I am beyond thankful to Nickelodeon and Netflix for this amazing opportunity and for believing in me. The family that show runner Patty Gary-Cox created along with Exec Producer and Creator Dicky Murphy and Exec Producers Sean W. Cunningham, Marc Dworkin and Producer Samantha Martin was beyond what I could imagine. We had so much love and support the entire run of the show. I seriously couldn’t have asked for anything more.

What’s the deal between Netflix and Nickelodeon?

It was widely reported that Netflix and Nickelodeon struck a major deal back in 2019, with the New York Times reporting that a deal between the two giants was worth a cool two hundred million dollars:

Netflix and Nickelodeon announced a deal on Wednesday for Nickelodeon to create and produce original animated feature films and television series based on Nickelodeon’s library of characters. Shows based on completely new characters are also part of the agreement. The companies gave no specifics on characters, the number of shows or how many years.

But the partnership involves a music-based project centered on Squidward, the malcontent anthropomorphic octopus on “SpongeBob SquarePants,” according to two people briefed on the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss still private details. The people said the overall deal was worth more than $200 million to Nickelodeon.

The multiyear deal allows Netflix to utilize Nickelodeon’s catalogue of properties, to produce original content for the streaming platform. The pairing of the two companies was not a bolt from the blue, as Netflix would pilfer from the company’s back catalog, showing shows such as Sam and Cat, Rocko’s Modern Life, and Hey Arnold!

Netflix recognized that the Nickelodeon properties had mileage, and in the constant war between platforms for content, they were not missing a chance to secure an advantage.

The show would get a premiere on Nickelodeon on April 20, 2023, and the episodes were released weekly, with the twelfth episode dropping on June 29, 2023. It took almost six months to appear on Netflix.
