Summary

Girls5eva has returned, and Renée Elise Goldsberry steals the show in a nostalgia-filled third season.

The iconic 90s girl group Girls5eva has staged a thrilling comeback. Reunited, they’ve recorded a fresh album and are set to embark on a comeback tour in Season 3. After two successful seasons on Peacock, the group decided to take their reunion to new heights with Netflix, bringing back the beloved characters of Dawn, Wickie, Summer, and Gloria for a six-episode third season.

A Nostalgic Ride

Girls5eva sees the ladies head out on the Returnity tour to promote their upcoming new album. The girl group hopes to find that success one more time, but plenty of obstacles stand in the way of it happening.

Our story unfolds in Fort Worth, Texas, where the ladies of Girls5eva have reunited, brimming with excitement for their world tour. However, their journey is far from smooth, as they encounter unforeseen obstacles in their path. Struggling to secure a venue, Wickie’s bold move sets the stage for a thrilling turn of events by booking the ladies at the iconic Radio City Music Hall in New York on Thanksgiving.

After booking the big venue, Girls5eva finds themselves in trouble after a bad gig in Texas, canceling the remainder of their tour. The group’s back against the wall forces them to do some self-reflection to make the big night in New York happen.

There is so much you can unpack about this six-episode return of Girls5eva. At times, it’s a bland sitcom with some truly underwritten moments that leave you scoffing. Other times, you see the underlying stories within these ladies, which pays off in sharing a strong message. I found myself engaged in the nostalgia factor more than anything.

The writers, along with the production and costume team, do a great job establishing a vibe that brings you back to an era, despite the present-day setting. Watching this would be like watching 98 Degrees run it back one more time by trying to capture the essence and sex appeal tied up in their old music that might not land like it used to.

Speaking of the music, the team of writers behind these outlandish yet hilarious songs deserve much credit. The lyrics make you laugh so hard that you rewind it to see if you heard it right the first time.

Girls5eva Season 3 is a worthwhile reunion tour

Our main cast in the group of Girls5eva each brings their own thing to the table. But Renée Elise Goldsberry is by far the star of the show. Goldsberry stepped up within the role of Winnie and took charge, leading the pack. A balance of serious, funny, and sex appeal, Goldsberry steals the show every time she is on the screen. There are quite a few cameos on the show that were rather great, but Gossip Girls fans will rejoice over the hilarious one from Thomas Doherty.

If you were invested in Girls5eva for the first two seasons, you will love the reunion tour the ladies bring to us. The good throughout the season outweighs the bad, and because of that, I give this a recommendation. For those who haven’t caught Girls5eva, Netflix will be releasing all three seasons simultaneously so you can binge all at once.
