You should have your eye on Anthracite, another international crime thriller full of cults, murder, and mystery that we already drew your attention to in our Streamer’s Guide to Netflix for April 2024. The French series, which will have six episodes and is due on April 10, is exactly the kind of dark and mysterious production subscribers have come to expect, and it’ll appeal to lovers of gritty crime drama, and folk horror mythology.

Anthracite has a mysterious premise

There is a lot going on in Anthracite, so let’s see what the official synopsis has to say:

“An old case is wrenched open when a reporter goes missing, leading his web sleuth daughter to a small mountain town haunted by a sect, secrecy, and death.”

The trailer (below) hints at dark cult-style murders and lore but also indicates that there may be a few humorous scenes too, which should hopefully punctuate the darkness. From the trailer we can see that a cult from decades ago features prominently, as does one of the main cast who is said to be “the son of the chosen one.” This will no doubt drive the narrative forward.

As well as this, the daughter of a reporter who has been murdered will also be a major POV. There is likely to be a final trailer for Anthracite before its official release, so keep an eye open if the show appeals to you.

Anthracite Main Cast

The cast of Anthracite includes:

  • Clément Penohat (Hatik) as Jaro
  • Noémie Schmidt as Ida
  • Camille Lou as Giovanna
  • Nicolas Godart as Romeo
  • Raphaël Ferret as Erwan Le Floch
  • Jean-Marc Barr as Solal Heilman (Père d’Ida)
  • Stefano Cassetti as Caleb (Gourou Secte)
  • Kad Merad as Claude (Oncle)
  • Vincent Rottiers

Hatik is known for his role in the music-based series Valide. Noemie Schmidt, you might remember from the French nun-based drama Women at War, and Camille Lou also starred in the same series.

Anthracite Release Date

Anthracite will debut globally exclusively on Netflix on April 10, 2024.

How many episodes will Anthracite have?

Anthracite will have six episodes and all of them will be available to stream on release day. It it very likely that the episode runtimes will be in the range of 40-60 minutes.

Where was Anthracite filmed?

There’s not a lot of information available about the exact filming locations of the show, but it is set in an Alpine town and is a French production, so some filming must have been done in the French Alps to capture that frozen landscape that sets the scene for the show.

What exactly is Anthracite?

Wikipedia describes anthracite as “a hard, compact variety of coal that has a submetallic lustre. It has the highest carbon content, the fewest impurities, and the highest energy density of all types of coal and is the highest ranking of coals.”

In the trailer, we hear that the bodies are found with anthracite on their faces before we cut to a scene of some dodgy-looking caves, so the substance plays a role in the mystery. Oddly, anthracite is only found in certain areas of the world, and France is not one of them, so that may be important to the plot, or it might not. Anthracite is difficult to set on fire, but when it does burn, it has a short blue and smoke-free flame. The substance has also been associated with underground fires that happen spontaneously and can burn for years.
