Summary
It’s a slight step up from the premiere, but 3 Body Problem is suffering from being overwritten to the point of disinterest. It has the elements to be great, but the execution is lacking.
Auggie’s back is against the wall, and her countdown is slowly coming to an end, forcing her to make a decision she doesn’t want to in Episode 2 of 3 Body Problem. As Auggie wrestles with the decision, Jin enters the altered reality of the game within the gold mask in an attempt to unpack if it was a reason why Dr. Vera had killed herself.
3 Body Problem Season 1 Episode 2 Recap
Ye Wenjie uncovers a plan for China to use the sun to amplify its transmission across the globe. Yang presents her idea to Commissar Lei, but Lei brings in Wenjie to verify his work, and she realizes he stole the idea. After confirming that his idea could work, Commissar Lei hates it and yells at Yang for even thinking about it, as it could kill them all.
Does Auggie shut down her lab?
With the countdown running down, Auggie heads into the lab to see if her experiment will work. It does, and everyone cheers her on for making history. However, when she steps out of the lab, she immediately tells everyone they are shutting down the project and walks out the door. Upon going outside, Da Shi awaits to talk to her about everything.
Da Shi asks Auggie about Mike Evans, who owns the world’s biggest privately owned oil company and wants to know about his relationship with Dr. Vera. Shi pulls up the security footage of Auggie conversing with the lady, but it has been altered. He breaks down how there have been many people who have seen the countdown and either quit working or killed themselves.
Jin puts on the gold mask to play the game. The altered reality within the game frightens her to the point where she asks Jack to come over to look at it. When Jack puts the mask on, the woman in the game tells him he doesn’t belong and cuts his head off. He removes the mask and puts it on again, and she does it again. Upon returning home, one of the masks has been delivered to his house.
What is Will Downing dying of?
We get a montage of Will teaching his class and meeting with a doctor where he receives a diagnosis. He meets with Jack in the park to break the news that he has pancreatic cancer, stage four. The cancer has spread all over his liver and lungs, and his median survival time is two to six months.
Da Shi unpacked that Mike Evans is wrapped up in anti-vax propaganda and 5G conspiracy theories with anti-science politicians around the world. He dug up some more information about how, in 1977, Ohio State University detected a 72-second sequence, which they called a WOW! Signal. Only an observatory in China was ever able to decode it, which coincidentally is around the same time Mike Evans was living in the country.
How does 3 Body Problem Season 1 Episode 2 end?
We return to 1977, where we see Ye Wenjie meeting Mike Evans. She tells Evans they are looking for a place to build a radio astronomy laboratory. Evans explains that building this will destroy the ecosystem just by building a radio lab. Before leaving, Wenjie talks to Evans alone, telling him she will try to stop it.
That night, Wenjie gets a message from a signal that says, “Do Not Answer. You are lucky that I am the first to receive your message. If you respond, we will come. Your world will be conquered.” Regardless of the message, Wenjie responds by saying, “Come. We cannot save ourselves. I will help you conquer this world.”
