Halo Season 3 is something that audiences want so Master Chief’s story can continue in live-action, and there are different avenues for the show to go down going forward. The most likely one is pulling the events of the video games, making changes where necessary to fit the characters and lore in the TV show.

Halo Season 2 has come to a close, with the Fall of Reach complete, the Flood unleashed, and the Chief managing to get to Halo. In Episode 8, Chief meets 343 Guilty Spark within Halo, and Soren-066, Kessler, Kwan, and Ackerson escape the Flood that have overrun the United Nations Space Command (UNSC) base on Onyx.

Halo Season 3 Has Not Yet Been Confirmed

Paramount hasn’t yet confirmed whether Halo will return for a third season, but as there is plenty more to adapt from this huge and well-known IP, it’s unlikely that the show will end here. While the second season was confirmed before the first season even came out, it seems that the studio is waiting to see the audience reaction among other metrics before renewing it.

Speaking to Collider, showrunner David Wiener said, “We definitely talked about where to go next in the story, and this season ends with a lot of those doors open and those possibilities.” In the same interview, executive producer Kiki Wolfkill said, “There’s a season three story we would love to tell.”

What could Season 3 be about?

As Halo Season 2 ends with Chief exploring the Halo and the Flood starting to make their presence known, Season 3 will likely explore the lore behind both the Halo and the Flood, as both are important to the canon of the universe. Something is waiting to meet Chief in the dark on the Ringworld, perhaps hinting at more Flood or possibly the Librarian, a Forerunner character who first appeared in lore entries in Halo 3, but had a more physical appearance in Halo 4. Whoever it is, it’s likely to help Chief understand the true purpose of Halo.

Season 2’s story takes inspiration from the events of the game Halo: Reach, and shows what happened after. If the story continues to follow this trajectory, the next video game in the timeline, Halo: Combat Evolved, could serve as a base for the narrative. In summary, the Pillar of Autumn, a UNSC ship fleeing the Fall of Reach, crashes on a Halo Ring called Installation 04. The Covenant follows, and fighting breaks out on the ring’s surface. This causes a parasitic alien known as the Flood to break out. Chief finds out the true purpose of the Halo, Captain Keyes dies and Chief blows up the Pillar of Autumn to destroy the Halo and flees. The Sangheili Thel ‘Vadamee leads the Covenant forces on Halo, though his presence is minimal in the game.

This would have to be adapted to fit the Silver Timeline. There’s been no mention of the Pillar of Autumn and Keyes is already dead. Changes would also need to be made to accommodate the villains, as the Arbiter in the Silver timeline, Var ‘Gatanai, is dead. Furthermore, while the Flood could still be on Halo, an outbreak has already occurred, and how the UNSC and Covenant respond to this new threat will be of critical importance.

A Flood Gravemind will likely form and be a formidable threat. This is the highest form of Flood and uses the shared knowledge of the collective Flood hivemind (which includes Margaret Parangosky) to guide the outbreak. In the games, a Gravemind wasn’t introduced until Halo 2. Halo 2 also saw the Flood infect High Charity, which is something that might be adapted at some point.

While Miranda Keyes doesn’t explicitly die at the end of Season 2, it’s hard to imagine her getting out of the UNSC base filled with Flood. Ackerson will want to warn the rest of the UNSC of this new threat, making the Flood a major antagonist. Kwan will no doubt want to investigate more about the Mother and what her purpose is, as right now it’s still unclear.

Season 3 Potential Release Date

It’s unclear when a hypothetical Season 3 of Halo could come out. Season 2 was announced in February 2022, and it took two years from that announcement until it was released, so it’s possible audiences will be looking at a similarly lengthy wait for Season 3, making 2026 a possible release year.

In the Collider interview, Wiener and Wolfkill touched on the impact the 2023 Hollywood strikes had on the future of Halo. “There was a work interruption, as you know, in Hollywood, and so that kind of you know, limited the…” said Wiener. Wolfkill added, “It was a hitch in the giddyup.”

This delay might mean audiences will have to wait even longer for a third season — if it ends up being confirmed.
