With only two episodes of The Regime left, it’s hard to imagine Elena regaining control of her country. She’s on a downward spiral, and the decision to cuckold poor Nicky while he was still in the room may turn him and her somewhat loyal councilors against her. The episode left us with highly pertinent questions about the Chancellor’s future in Episode 5 and beyond.
If anything, “Midnight Feast” was full of surprises (especially that ending). The episode saw Elena dealing with perimenopause, worker protests, and a horse-related fatality. Her attempts to appease the angry workers could have succeeded had she not decided to force them into submission. Herbert met the leader of the opposition during his imprisonment and had to make a difficult decision. We, the audience, got to watch Hugh Grant’s excellent portrayal of Ed (RIP Ed, it was a pleasure meeting you).

Will Nicky leave Elena?
Nicky may have thought his plans for Herbert’s downfall worked, but he couldn’t have foreseen him gaining back favor with his Chancellor. Elena imprisoned Herbert, so it stands to reason he would have jumped at the opportunity to betray her. Instead, Herbert committed triple homicide to prove his love for her. That’s a tough one to compete with for Nicky.
As Elena’s husband, Nicky enjoyed some influence over her. Now, he’s pushed to the side (quite literally). He might sit back and take it, or he could try to leave. But Elena is a dictator who just ordered everyone locked into her Palace. So even if Nicky wants to separate from her, he might not be able to.
Will Agnes finally get the courage to betray her Chancellor?
In Episode 4, Agnes receives an offer from a mysterious U.S. benefactor. They gave her and her son an out from under Elena’s ruthless regime. She may have ended the phone call claiming loyalty to Elena, but things have changed. The Chancellor’s actions caused the protests to turn violent, and, more importantly, Agnes is still forced to live away from her child. Agnes seems to be slowly but surely reaching a breaking point, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she plays a part in the regime’s downfall.
Are Elena and Herbert a couple now?
The episode’s ending left me speechless. Sure, there was always a bit of flirting between Elena and her pet Butcher, but I wasn’t expecting their relationship to turn sexual. If Herbert was a rational and reasonable person, he would have turned against Elena as soon as she did the same to him. But he is neither of those things. He is in love with Elena and would do anything for her affection.
The same goes for our Chancellor. If Elena was a rational and reasonable person, she would have stayed far away from the man who almost strangled her to death. But, like Herbert, she’s not. Strangely, these two deserve each other as they bring out the worst in one another. It will be interesting to see how their relationship plays out in the next episode. Herbert’s influence will likely lead to even more turmoil for Elena’s unfortunate country, as would an official relationship announcement.
