Murder Mubarak has captured the imagination of filmgoers with its whodunit-style premise and ensemble cast of characters. The resurgence of the whodunit movie seems to have come about through franchises such as Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot trilogy and the Knives Out franchise, both of which were obvious influences here (along with the source novel). If you enjoyed it on Netflix, here are ten mystery movies like Murder Mubarak you should also check out.
Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
Darling luvvy Kenneth Branagh would bring Agatha Christie’s most famous novel to life in a star-studded murder mystery set on the iconic train. With the most outrageous mustache ever presented on film, Branagh would star alongside the likes of Willem Dafoe, Penelope Cruz, and Judi Dench in the classic tale of murder and revenge. It could be argued that Christie would be the inspiration for films such as Murder Mubarak, even today.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)
The second film in this series from the mind of Rian Johnson sees Daniel Craig reprising his role as Detective Benoit Blanc in another star-studded mystery that has Ed Norton, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Serena Williams, and Hugh Grant assembled for some murderous skulduggery just like our featured film.
Clue (1985)
Every decade would embrace the whodunit and in the 80s they would, of course, take it all one step further and present a movie version of the classic board game Clue (or Cluedo, depending on where you live). The cast includes a star turn from Tim Curry but was sadly overlooked at the time, only becoming a bit of a cult hit in later years. The film would have three different endings but you would have to travel if you wanted to see them, as different theatres showed different cuts of the film — perhaps one gimmick too far.
Murder Mystery (2019)
Murder Mystery is another Netflix film that cuts straight to the chase with its title. Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston would head the bill as a New York cop and his wife, spicing up their marriage with a European trip that leads to them being framed for a murder. A light and easy watch on a Sunday afternoon.
Identity (2003)
John Cusack and Ray Liotta star in this claustrophobic and mind-bending thriller which has a classic premise: Ten strangers assembled in an isolated environment, with a killer on the loose stalking them one by one. The twist ending might seem convoluted, but if you like a mystery this is a must-see.
And Then There Were None (1945)
Another classic whodunit from the mind of Agatha Christie that has been adapted a few times and has often been the template for many other films. Again we find seven guests all brought to a remote location where they are dispatched one at a time until the killer is revealed. It never gets old and is the template for the genre for decades to come.
Gosford Park (2001)
With a screenplay by Downtown Abbey’s Julian Fellows, this murder mystery is set in a stately English home, with a cast of characters who have arrived for a shooting party. But as secrets are revealed, it seems as if some of the cast may have an ulterior motive for being there.
Andhadhun (2018)
This highly acclaimed mystery has a touch of Hitchcock about it and follows the story of a blind concert pianist preparing for a London gig, and accidentally being befriended by Sophie, who runs into him on her moped. However, a murder soon sets off a chain of events that leads to twists, turns, and a moral dilemma. The film would go on to win three national movie awards and is worth a watch.
Taalash: The Answer Lies Within (2012)
We’re approaching some darker material with this entry on our list that follows Inspector Surjan Shekhawat, haunted by a tragic past, struggling with his own private life, and thrown into the investigation of a murder, with only sex worker Rosie being able to help him in his quest. If you choose to watch, stay until after the credits for a short epilogue.
Raatchasan (Ratsasan) (2018)
More murder and more mystery, but again with a darker tone, this time featuring a wannabe filmmaker who goes into law enforcement and finds himself trying to stop a serial killer who has been targeting young girls. Some stunning cinematography and a mystery at the center make this a must-watch on our list.
