Constellation hasn’t yet been renewed for Season 2 at Apple TV+, but after that thoroughly confusing ending, it might need one just to set the story straight.

The mind-bending sci-fi thriller followed a woman returning from space with chunks of her life missing. The series had a star-studded cast, including Noomi Rapace, Jonathan Banks, and James D’Arcy, but my patience wore thin with it.

Constellation Has Not Been Officially Renewed For Season 2

At the time of writing (March 20, 2024), Constellation has not been officially renewed for Season 2. With any renewal process, the streaming platform will take a look at all the data, weigh the options, and determine whether the series is worthy of a second season.

Constellation was created by Peter Harness, who wrote the series based on a concept from Sean Jablonski. That concept, which is thoroughly bonkers in multiple ways, might prove to be either the undoing or the saving grace of the show. Viewers will either be completely turned off by all the ambiguity, or they’ll clamor for a second season to fill in the remaining gaps.

How has Season 1 performed?

Constellation has garnered mixed to positive reviews from critics. Its rating is 7.0 out of 10 on IMDb, while on Rotten Tomatoes, it has a score of 71% and an audience score of 77%. Those stats aren’t great, but they aren’t bad for the sci-fi thriller.

Critics have been all over the place, with some saying that the solid performances and creepy atmosphere make the series an engaging thriller, and others (who agree with me) saying that the series is a slog of an overwritten and underwhelming drama.

From our Constellation review:

The series wastes some incredible performances by Noomi Rapace and twins Rosie and Davina Coleman. As I mentioned, the early parts of Constellation set in space deliver some incredible moments, and Rapace leads the charge. But even when she is delivering lights-out dialogue, you are so wrapped up in unwarranted confusion that you don’t care.

In keeping track of how Apple does its renewal process, I’ve noticed a trend in how it renews its shows. You either get a renewal within the first few weeks of the show’s release, shortly after it ends, or when they have a big reveal. If you look at the numbers, I don’t foresee a second season of Constellation. The combination of the underwhelming critical response and not overly great audience reaction leans heavily into that thought process.

That said, if the finale hits a home run with audiences and can maintain a high ranking on the Apple TV+ charts once it goes off the air, Apple might be inclined to give it another season. I would be shocked if the show got a renewal, but, as always, we will keep you posted on any updates regarding the pending renewal of Constellation.
